Who will be the better WR? David Gettis vs. Brandon LaFell

Better depends on what you value. Speed and stretching the field vertically or being a possession receiver and making first downs. Gettis is more explosive but LaFell has better hands and body control.

I think both will be valuable.

they are good compliments to each other, so I'm glad we have both.

It's like asking me to choose between my kidneys. I think both LaFell and Gettis have potential to be great. I believe LaFell is a little more clutch with his catches though.

I'd love for next season to come and go and both prove themselves worthy of being the new #1 and #2 WR for the team.

dunno how accurate the stats are, but this nj.com site claims to have Stats Inc dropped passes stats for Lafell (here) and Gettis (here). It's also got a dropped pass leaderboard (here).

Lafell had 7 drops and caught 49% of passes thrown his way, being targeted 77 times; Gettis had 1 drop and caught 55% of passes thrown his way, being targeted 67 times. Smith (here) had 8 drops, and caught 46.5% of passes thrown his way, and was targeted 99 times.

For reference, Andre Johnson had 7 drops but caught 62% of his passes (here), TO had 11 drops and caught 52% of his passes (here), and Welker had 13 drops but still caught 70% of passes thrown to him (here).

...annnnyway. so yeah. drops aren't everything, but it's clear Lafell had far more than Gettis.

I think Gettis has the greatest potential, but I think that Lafell is more likely to be a solid player.

Gettis has issues with run blocking, he sometimes has route running issues, but when he gets it right he can break some ankles with his speed and burst.

Lafell's already got a solid base but needs to work on his hands. He's deceptively fast, can use his body well, and when he focuses, can make AMAZING catches.

They both can be great, but I think that Gettis' floor and ceiling are quite different from Lafell's.

^this

I look at it in, kind of, the same light as the Newton v Gabbert debate. Gettis is a boom or bust guy so to speak. Whereas, I think Lafell, at worst, will be a solid number 3 WR, but his ceiling would be about a really good 2/okay #1. Gettis could be a younger, faster Plax or the next Drew Carter.

All that said, I think both will end up being really good players for us. (Although, I always thought Carter would too.)

What a refreshing topic. I am so sick of all the draft speculation. Lets talk about tangible things that we actually have on the team!

I think Gettis has the higher ceiling with his speed but I think Lafell will improve a lot this coming season. I actually am thrilled with both so far and expect them both to improve in this next season. I also am counting on artmanti to emerge this coming season. it seem like most people have already written him off without even seeing what he can do. We reached for the guy for a reason. He is going to turn some heads.

I'm not sure I would say LaFell has better hands. I would say that's his biggest mark against him along with not lacking top end speed it seems....

He can make spectacular catches but drop some easy ones. I think he has good football speed, which is kinda underrated.

Yeah I always thought that was one of the FO's bigger mistakes in recent memory. We shouldn't have let Carter get away. He had a pretty good year, goes off to the Raiders and destroys his knees again. We could have used his deep threat ability in 08, 09.

didn't matter, the guy was made of tooth picks. We all wanted him to succeed, but unfortunately, he just didnt have it.
