Darin Gantt no longer covering Panthers

It can definitely be shelved.

E-mailed Gantt to say we were sorry to see him go. In his response, he confirmed there's no conspiracy. Just economics. So you can take off the tinfoil hats.

It's just an unfortunate circumstance (for us too, but more directly for him).

This is a loss. Gantt's print articles were for the general public but his blog and twitter usually had goodies for the hardcore fans. Hopefully his replacement understands that team insight and fan access are what made Gantt popular.

Unfortunately, it may have been what got him fired as well.

He wasn't fired.

He was reassigned because the Herald couldn't afford to loan him out to the Observer anymore. They needed him to cover something local to them (in this case, Winthrop).

It has nothing to do with anything he reported or said on Twitter.

Some of you guys are worthless dicks.

Bet my dick is worth more than Gantt's opinion right now...

There isn't a local Charlotte area reporter that will ask any hard questions, write anything that might piss Jerry off or do anything except curl up in the fetal position during a JR presser for fear of losing their stadium credential.

Everything is a conspiracy around here and you will convince no one otherwise. :(

I sent an E-Mail explaining why I was upset Gantt was reassigned, here is their reply:

Dear Mr. Hostetler,

Thank you for writing to let me know your opinion.

I agree that Darin Gantt has done a great job for us in covering the

Panthers. Actually, for the past year or so, Darin and Joe Person, the

NFL writer for our sister paper, The Charlotte Observer, have worked as

a team.

Just as so many companies are needing to find ways to economize, I have

routinely had to make decisions to allocate my resources differently. It

used to be that all S.C. newspapers would have their own reporters

covering Gamecock games and the S.C. legislature. Now I rely on my

sister newspaper, The State in Columbia, to provide me with this

coverage. The Charlotte Observer used to cover York County government

for its S.C. readers; now they look to The Herald to do it. In this

economy, we have all had to examine how we can do things more

efficiently.

The Observer and The Herald can no longer afford two Panthers writers,

good as they both are. At the same time, my local sports reporter

resigned, leaving The Herald without anyone to cover, among other

sports, Winthrop University's athletics. That is why Darin was

reassigned. I look forward to him bringing the same level of expertise

and sharp writing to a subject equally close to the hearts of our local

readers as the Panthers. I also believe Joe Person will do an excellent

job for us as our NFL reporter.

Sincerely,

Debbie Abels

Nothing shady at all.

Yeah, I agree, a big smokescreen. Probably has something to do with the NFL players Anti-trust lawsuit....... Two writers, No NFL, but salaries guaranteed.... It may be the Charlotte Observer Monopoly on Local Panthers News...

Or, It may be that they hired Person to be the exclusive Panthers Beat Writer/Rear Kisser.

Edit: I forgot to mention Cam Newton too. It is the Apocalyptic nature of things these days.

So, if they're both owned by McClatchy, why don't the let Gantt cover the Panthers and reassign Person? Gantt has seniority, doesn't he? Let Gantt work as the Panthers beat reporter for the Observer, and move Person to the Herald.
