Green-Dareus-Peterson & Excitement

Addressing this whole idea of excitement and a QB being the only way...

When I honestly ask myself who I want on this team...its one of these three guys: Green, Dareus, or Peterson. Yeah, Cam seems to be the most logical with the number one selection but anyone of these guys can bring as much excitement as a QB if they hit their potential in the league. Just look at what players like Irving, Deoin Sanders, Bailey, Woodson, Moss, Rice, Sapp, etc. have done for teams in the past.

The Cowboys got Irving before Aikman rolled into town, selecting three studs three consecutive seasons once you include Smith. Sapp was the face of the Bucs team that won the Super Bowl, not really Brad Johnson so much. Randy Moss may be an oddball but no doubt he lifted the Vikings franchise a ton...and also, I couldn't imagine what the 49ers would be without Rice being Montana's main guy. Once some of these teams set the ground work, they found their QB and became long term contenders.

So who's to say a Peterson, Green, or Dareus can't do this? If they are for sure prospects as everyone admits, why not grab them?

Again, I'm not necessarily against Cam or Blaine & I want a franchise QB as much as the next guy, but people need to admit finding that exciting QB to watch isn't the only thing that can lift a franchise from the rubble. Its about building an all around exciting team that WINS.

Now time for my wishful thinking: I personally hope we draft one of these three guys in an unlikely trade-down scenario then just fill our needs (OL, DT, CB, TE, etc.) with the BPA through the remaining draft. An entire organization shouldn't have to adapt to a certain type of QB. There should be a mutual & symbiotic relationship between a QB and team where they meet in the middle between building around a guy...& that QB fusing himself into the team's fabric. Virtually every QB (minus maybe Dalton & Ponder) in this years draft will essentially handcuff a team on what type of squad to build in my honest opinion.

uh the 49ers were 15-1 and sb champs the year before they drafted rice i believe. just nitpicking haha

but yes i agree, the qb crop this year sucks

Yeah I know :), I was primarily addressing the 90's Cowboys with that statement

I buy what the OP is selling minus dareus. I just can't get excited about a guy whos main job is to clog up running lanes and help other players make plays. he is not the best pass rusher. sacks are not going to be his calling card. So i don't see much excitement around him.

Even though they lost, him and Upshaw were the catalysts for Alabama jumping to that huge lead against Auburn. Dareus just has that commanding presence that I think would fit great with Beason & Chuck on our D. To add on to the Dallas comparison, I would say Russell Maryland actually is an example of this type of DT pick when they were building their 90s juggernaut.

If I had to order them, it would go 1) Green 2) Dareus 3) Peterson

So you are basically saying that good players will be good after we get a QB.

The Cowboys drafted Johnson, then with their first pick (because after drafting a great WR they were the worst team in the league) They got Aikman he had a down year/ learning year (but much better than the year before). Then they started winning.

I seriously doubt they wish they had gone CB or DT with the Aikman pick.

1.The year before Johnson they picked a DT at 12

2. got a little worse; pick at 11 WR

3. got a lot worse; pick next year at 1 QB

4. got a lot better; pick the year after at 17 RB

I would prefer to start at step three. Being the worst team in the league.

I'm basically saying Quarterbacks aren't the only players that generate excitement, it takes time to build an elite team, and you don't always have to start at QB to do so. Real mind blowing stuff.

Edit: And if we do somehow draft Green, I think we can manage better than the 1-15 1989 Cowboys. It was a process of 3 stellar first round picks that eventually made them great.

Where did Megatron get the Lions? Last in the NFL just like the Johnson did the Cowboys.

Where did Dan Wilkinson get the Bengals? The #1 pick the following year.

You don't immediately need a QB if you're thinking in the long run imo. I'm not trying to school you or anything, just making my case ;)

The Lions offense has greatly improved because of Calvin Johnson, but they had and still have a poor defense and an injury prone franchise QB they took a gamble on. Us not so much. I was comparing us to teams that used these multi-year strategies and did well because I like looking on the positive side of things.

In the end I think Green can elevate our offense the most out of any player in this draft and Newton straight up puzzles me. You don't believe this and I respect your opinion. Basically, one day I'm cool with Cam being the pick, the next he doesn't even seem like 1st round material. It was only about 2 1/2 months ago when people were saying he was a 2nd-3rd round prospect.

And honestly, I can endure a year with Bulger or hell maybe even Moore. Bottom line is we don't have that sh*tstorm of a situation that went on last year and will no doubt will be able to move the ball more effectively.

Well said man. Agree to disagree. I go back and forth on Cam myself but im leaning more and more toward him. Perhaps because no one is talking about Gabbert anymore. I dunno.

My deal is I'm crossing my fingers a year or 2 for this guy (even moreso than Luck):

      They can get film of all the games? Every team? Wow! Who knew… Our games with them are big examples of why they are in  the CB market so hard.   It is the study they do getting ready for the games.  Preparing to play against is a little different than just analyzing film in scout mode. Deeper dive. Then you are analyzing post game too.  This goes to why players often change teams but stay in the division. The opponents know each other on a higher level.  Plus if you lost to us, you used to get fired. Now you have to trade your first round pick. Moving up on the world.

      I honestly can’t believe this team’s turnaround this season. It’s surreal. Figured healthy we’d be fringe playoffs and with another lottery pick could finally turn the corner, but we don’t even need that. This group is ready. We haven’t played remotely well the last 5 games and yet still blew out 5 bad teams by 16+ each game like it was casual practice. We had a few solid teams with Kemba and Big Al but this is easily our best group since the original Hornets moved to NO. Man, what a shift in culture this new ownership group and front office has brought. So damn happy to see it after years of suffering and consistently meaningless games in this stretch of previous seasons.   Only 2.5 games out of the 6 seed, although Miami, Atlanta and Orlando have been playing well too. Gonna be a fun final stretch, hopefully we can get a top 8 seed at the very least. Celtics tomorrow will be a good test. Would be huge to keep the road winning streak up against a very hot top team on the 2nd half of a back to back. We’ve played Boston pretty well the last few years with much of this same group despite sucking so I do feel pretty good about it. Kon is due for a huge game coming off a few cold shooting games (although despite the poor shooting he’s been contributing well with defense, assists and rebounds).

      It amazes me how underrated Horn has become after he finally was able to stay on the field. Sure last year wasn’t perfect but he was still a huge reason for our rebound defensively and I’d say he’s easily a top 10 corner. You don’t want to see Mike Jackson as our top corner. Any player is available for the right price but I’d be extremely hesitant to move Horn even for a big haul from LA.
