A list of new characters to join the third season of Game of Thrones has reportedly been unveiled.

A Storm of Swords, the third book from George RR Martin's Song of Ice and Fire novel series will be spread over two seasons of the HBO drama.

The teenage Reed siblings, Catelyn Stark's uncle and Stannis Baratheon's wife and daughter will be among the new characters introduced in the third season.

The list of new characters is as follows:

Mance Rayder: Previously mentioned in the series, a former member of the Night's Watch who became known as the 'King Beyond the Wall', and the leader of the Wildlings.

Daario Naharis: A seductive warrior.

Jojen Reed and Meera Reed: A teenage brother and sister with "special insights".

Edmure Tully: A young member of the Tully family.

Ser Brynden Tully (The Blackfish): Catelyn Stark's uncle.

Lady Selyse Florent: Stannis Baratheon's wife.

Shireen: Stannis's daughter.

Olenna Redwyne (The Queen of Thorns): Margaery Tyrell's grandmother.

Beric Dondarrion: A skilled knight, the leader of the outlaw group Brotherhood Without Banners.

Thoros of Myr: A red priest.

Tormund Giantsbane: A Wildling raider.

Showrunner David Benioff said of the new characters: "It's important to point out that we have the largest cast on television right now. We introduced dozens of new characters in season two.

"If you hurl 300 characters at an audience, the story collapses under the weight of too many faces, too many names, and too many subplots.

"We need to be just as mindful of the audience members who have never read the books as we are of the readers; the series will fail if we only appeal to those who already know the characters.

"So we try to be parsimonious about how many new roles we introduce to the story and when we introduce them."

On whether there may be more characters to those already listed, he added: "And a few others... holy hell, that's a lot of new faces."

Looks like the Reeds in Season 3! :D and i thought they already had Beric Dondarrion in the first season. I guess they will re-cast just like they did with the Mountain that Rides.

Also, I read some speculation that the Gregor recast this season was due to Conan Stevens (the Mountain in season 1) was busy filming The Hobbit during the shooting of Season 2 of GOT, and that it could be possible that he would return in future seasons... They haven't really given the new guy a lot of screen time this season, so maybe that is a sign that old Gregor will be back?

Good news for the Reeds. Beric was in season one but could be recast. He's an awesome character for sure. Good news.

The next 2 seasons are going to be amazing, I can't wait for all the shock value coming up :). Non-readers are going to get minds blown

I am sure Beric will be recast, but I am already giddy about ASOS coming to life on the screen.

BTW. Does anyone here believe that the actor playing Jaime is going to be willing to part with his hair?? He looks too much like a pretty boy IRL.

Well I am sure he is much more willing to part with his actual hair than his actual hand. But you know those method actors these days...

not much of a difference there than in the books, though... Yeah, it was his brother, but they're just saving themselves a casting of a more minor character by letting Loras do it...

chris, that list is only SOME of the characters that will be cast... There are several theories out there concerning Ramsay... either:

A. he's already been "stealth" cast and will appear next episode

B. he's already been "stealth" cast and will appear next season

C. he'll be cast for season 3

D. Dagmer Cleftjaw of this season = Roose's bastard son (replacing Ramsay as a character, saving the extra casting)

season 3 will only be the first half or so of ASOS, so season 4 will likely have some more characters cast also...

OH I was gonna add, if Ramsay is indeed going to make it to the show as Ramsay (not replaced by someone else) my choice is Domhnall Gleeson... He looks just like I mentally pictured Ramsay as I read it...

    • What you are saying isn't always true and I'll give you several examples to demonstrate this. 1) The best player on the board at the end of in round 1 by all consensus is RB (top 15 player in draft who slips b/c of the devaluation of the RB position). Your team is in desperate need of a LT because the current one is getting your QB killed. You already have a serviceable RB in place. The LT has a 2nd round grade and you have the first pick on day 2 of the draft Who do you choose? 2) Your run defense was abysmal the previous season. A DT in round 2 does not provide much in terms of pass rush, but most reports have him rated as the best pure run stuffing DT in the draft. The two highest rated players on your board at the time are a TE and tweener at OLB/DE who slipped into round 2 after a run on WR's. Who do you choose? 3) Your pass rush rush is solid across the board. You even have guy coming off of the bench to provide production. Your secondary in below average. No Safety on the roster is a difference maker and as a unit the squad doesn't have an INT. The highest rated player on the board is a DE. The 5th highest rated player on the board is a an intelligent ball hawking Safety. Which player would make the team immediately better?  1) I think the BPA logic applies when your team is solid across the board and you can afford to draft for depth 2) I think it also applies when your team stinks and any solid player will be an immediate upgrade over what you already have. I agree that you should NEVER reach for a player when you are need at a position like we did for Bryce Young. But I also think if there's is a player on the board that will fill a glaring weakness you need to take him even if a player with a higher over all ranking is available at another position (which isn't a need)
    • Bryce Young excels at dividing Panthers fans. That seems to be what he's best at.
    • 184 yards game, 61% completion 11 tds 5ints    thats ranks :check notes:  25th in the nfl
