How long do you keep your car

CRA

Recommended Posts

Came back from overseas and paid cash with my last bonus for a 96 reliable luxury car with 50k miles and an SUV for the wife with 22k miles. We both drive around 3000 miles a year so I plan to give my car to my kid in 11 years when he can drive and play the wife's car by ear...

likely no new cars for 5-10 years...

Do you guys generally ride your cars until they literally fall apart 12+ years down the road......or trade in after 5-8 years to ensure you have a generally reliable car.......or do you have to the latest and greatest every few years?

I currently drive an aging luxury SUV. LR Discovery. It's paid off and I love it to death despite it generally being an unreliable truck. Still it's my first car and I hope to keep it forever. It'll likely never sell for what it's worth to me despite the fact that it's in great shape.

I enjoy learning about the car and working on it too.

My first vehicle was a 03 Ranger that has been kept in excellent shape and only has 75k. Replacement parts are cheap, though nothing has ever broken, and I plan to run it until the engine freezes.

With regular maintenance it should last at least until the 200k mark. The only thing that would make me trade it in would be an overly expensive repair or a drastic change in my life. The vehicle must be reliable, but having a vehicle that is paid off and being able to put that money somewhere else each month is much better than having a nice car.
