Cam Newton and The Curious Case of No Primetime Games

Earlier today, when I was asked who I would take in the draft, I answered Marcell Dareus, but there was much more to it than that. I said that Marcell filled an immediate hole, would probably start day one, and would free up linebackers, etc. But, I also said that that pick didn't carry any sort of "flash" to it.

Marcell Dareus is a very good player. I think he is one of the Top 3 best in this draft. But, lets face it, DTs don't sell jerseys. (Suh did, but that's the exception, not the rule.)

But, on the other hand, Cam Newton will bring tons of media attention to Carolina. He may fill in immediately, or, he will at least compete immediately. (I'm not saying he won't beat out Jimmy, don't freak out Cam people.)

Cam Newton, though, is the type of player that ESPN wants to talk about. They want to watch him play. They want to see a good story, and Cam Newton is definitely an interesting story no matter how you look at it. I don't remember a prospect being this polarizing. I mean, look at the types of debates he's started up on here!

There's also another curious thing about this Draft. With our schedule being released a week and a half before the Draft, and it revealing we have no primetime games. I'm sure there was no one more furious about this than Jerry Richardson, but, honestly, what did he expect? He gutted an average team, leaving nothing but youth and inexperience.

But, somewhere, the Big Cat has to be thinking about all of the dollars that he lost this season by not having a single primetime game. No huge advertising dollars. Nothing to display his team, that he so loves. Nothing. Nada zip.

Now, onto to the question. Do any of you think that Jerry might be swayed by someone like Cam. Someone who can come in immediately, and have the bright light of the media follow them. Someone that, say, could potentially bring us a flex scheduled primetime game this season. Someone that will have reporters hammering at the door, will drive jersey sales, and will have more hits to the Panthers website?

Winning will bring media attention to the team, that's all I care about.

Winning sells tickets.

Oh, I know.

But my question was more focused in the "near-future".

Winning in Carolina wouldn't bring in everyone, not immediately, because we're such a small market team. I would compare it to a slow-moving storm front with huge potential versus a summer lightning storm that comes out of nowhere.

winning year in and year out gets the biggest media attention, not just the once in a couple years the panthers have been doing their whole franchise..even then it's not guaranteed just look at san diego still having trouble selling out games.

You have the wrong mind set. Winning is everything as long as cam wants to come in and learn. Use his poential and work his butt off and and try to be great and win football games. Thats all that Matter.

I like the idea of taking him and giving him time to get the hang of things behind Clausen. I think he could be great if he was given enough time to develop.

If Clausen is good enough to be a stable vet that will start while Newton learns then we shouldn't be drafting Cam at all. I would still rather the QB we drafted last year progress and be our starter but the QB position is to unstable to not address it somehow.

    • Another layer to that is Ive seen Seattle has been in the market for CB help this off-season.   Michael had a higher PFF grade than Horn who got 15 games this season. He wants to be here too, that's a huge bonus for any 5 win team that had awful pass rush.  The 7th rounder Michael Barrett didn't last long on Seattle, he was cut before the season I think and ended up on browns PS. He's already been on 5.......5 teams within one year.......
    • You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.
    • THANKS my guy! Keeping up with this threads theme, if I view a thread and there's only 20 posts and some time passes. If I see there's one new post and read the name; @Dave Gettleman's Shortsis among the chosen few that I will reopen that thread just to see what you posted.    Thanks again, plus not just a scout, thats scotty mccloughans son?!?!? If not for the deep claws of booze, scotty is among the best talent finders this league has recently had. Last I heard he ran a consulting business. Caden could be one of those who's on a early path to being a GM in the future. I was a big fan of his dad, dam shame about booze demon ruining his career.
