Panthers State of the Franchise

I keep hearing the "experts" say we are picking Newton, but few if any say they would if they were the GM. Then Panthers are giving Newton a very long look which they should, but nobody within the organization has said they were taking Newton. Hurney will not stake his career on Cam Newton. He is too inaccurate, too controversial, and too risky. I see Peterson or Green. That is why he wants to trade down; he thinks he can get a second rounder and grab the player he wants.

Maybe Dareus, but there are DTs in the second round if he trades. A worst case scenario is drafting Jenkins or Drake Nevis in the third.

Nobody is talking about the potential loss of Steve Smith. The Panthers know his status, and I would say his return is unlikely based on comments by Rivera. Now, if that is they case, and they can get Green, he could be the first overall selection. Do not be surprised. There are no sure #1 Wrs after Jones. Peterson? Maybe, but establishing weapons on offense will be crucial.

The guy few are talking about? Matt Moore. He fits the offense well.

Charlie Casserly said he could see Cam dropping out of the top 10 if we do not take him. Now, we are one of the safest-drafting teams in the past 10 years or so, always getting value in the first round. RBs (Williams, Stewart), OTs (Gross, Otah), LBs (Davis, Beason), are pretty safe picks. DE Peppers and CB Gamble were the other first rounders since 2002.

Dareus, Green, Peterson. That is our board, if Hurney stays true to form.

.

Lets hope he learned SOMETHING from his mentor Bobby Beathard.

so if the experts think we are taking newton but dont' think we should..don't you think they are hearing something that says we could be taking him? i mean if there were reports we were interested in gabbert he would be mocked at number 1 instead since that is their golden boy. somebody has to be getting this info and it must be believable because a lot of people are believing it. All our local writers and Pat Y must be hearing something from within or around our organization to hint as much.

The biggest question mark right now is at QB but its not the only question mark. This franshise has a lot of decissions to make this offseason that is going to effect the direction of the team. If anything the state of this franshise is up in the air.

The outcome of the CBA is going to be huge. If by chance a new CBA doesn't include restricted free agency tenders and/or the ability to apply franshise tags, the Panthers could end up being in shambles. The team needs to sure up the contracts for Kalil, C. Johnson, Davis, Anderson, Moore, D. Williams and Marshall. There is also injury concerns surrounding Otah and Wharton along the offensive line. Not to mention the status of Steve Smith and his desire to stay in Carolina or leave. There is some talent amoung the youth on the team but many have not been able to step up when needed like Swhartz and Bernadeau.

There is a nice core about this team with players like Gross, Gamble and Beason. But there is going to need to be some infussion of some free agents along with some young unproven guys stepping up. By the time the season actually starts, I think the roster is going to look very different than what most of us would imagine going in. And that is the reason the franshise is so up in the air.

    • Sometimes its fun to read the threads/posts.  The panthers could literally hire a groundskeeper and we'd have a thread "improving the field for no other reason to prop up Bryce Young".  Apparently no move is ever done to actually make the team better.  All a conspiracy to just focus on Bryce Young. Or suddenly daydreaming and reminiscing about Sam Darnold when he was hated more than Bryce Young.  Its really fun to do a message board search about Darnold during that time period.   Or thinking there is just a tree that grows QB, and you can just easily go up and pluck one.
    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
