The 3-4

Recommended Posts

You need to pick up a 5-tech. Irvin's more suited to be a DE.

I was just doing it based on who we had.

But I think the Panthers are one good defensive end and one good defensive tackle away from being able to run multiple defensive schemes and having a top 10 defense.

Unfortunatley, I think QB is a more significant area of need. That is why I am for Newton #1 overall then a DT in round #3.

Brown-----Beason-----Davis-----Norwood

Hardy-----E. Johnson-----C. Johnson

I list Brown and Norwood as they're likely our best "speed rushers". I like the flexibility Beason and Davis can provide with their range and ability to cover man/zone.

Reguarding the DL C. Johnson, and Hardy have the size and strength to hold up, up front (could also see Tyler Brayton in this role as well). I remember in one of his early PC's or perhaps an interview, Rivera specifically mentioned DT-Ed Johnson, and being intrigued by him. I'm not sure why he fell out of favor with our staff last seaon as I remember him making plays early in the season as a starter til he had some inactive Sundays, as well as playing second string from time to time.

(Sorry no edit option) This is based off of our current roster FYI.

We don't need to draft anyone for a 3-4 as it's not and won't be our base D, we're sticking with a 4-3 with some 34 concepts thrown in.

Let's not go overboard drafting for something we'll seldomly use.

I didn't say draft them for a 3-4, I said draft them solely on need and right now the Panthers really could use another DE (I would suspect they grab one in the later rounds), and we most notably need another DT (Of course that will be addressed.) The fact that we add two more guys just makes it easier to run a 3-4 especially if they have experience with both formations.

One of the reasons I want to go defense is to really give Rivera the chance to coach a defense with top talent at literally every position. I think he could really bring us to the top of the league again.

A DT in the first won't decide whether this defense is good or not. Frankly the best DTs not named Suh usually are mediocre their rookie year. I doubt 3 or 4 sacks his first year will put us over the top. We need several guys on defense and a few free agents. I would also suggest that the best defense would be keeping the other offense off the field by controlling the ball on offense ourselves. A good offense will instantly improve the defense. Seems to me once we fix that side of the ball, we will have a shot to contend. The defense will be better this year in either case.

One of the things I'm looking forward to the most about the new coaches is improving our depth- having guys that actually make plays and contribute, not just impress Fox with his attitude in practice. I think we'll see huge turnover before the season starts.

If that's true, we COULD have the personnel in place to run the 3-4 this year. That has been the reason many on this board said we would never run it in the past.

    • I guess so. Don't think I was involved with previous discussions.  Tepper is one of the newest owners in the NFL. Dan is going into his 3rd season as a GM - ever. Dave is going into his 3rd season as a HC - ever. Before becoming a HC, he was an OC/playcaller for one season total. Idzik is about to go into his 1st year as a play caller - ever. WRs are rookies, sophomores and 3rd year guys - though the experienced 3rd year guys are XL and Coker (who has missed a ton of games). TEs are guys going into their 2nd and 3rd seasons, and Tommy Tremble - though Sanders has missed a ton of games. QB has played 3 years. Chuba is an experienced RB, but Brooks and Etienne have taken very little snaps at the position. O-line is more experienced vets with some talent - which is HUGE. Need them to stay healthy. I mean the offense is very young in every aspect except O-line. You see it differently?
    • I said this ALL last season and will say it again this year. Our record means diddly squat this year, I don't care if we have 0 wins or 17 wins, I only care about one thing and one thing only. Bryce proves without a shadow of a doubt that he IS or ISN'T our long term solution at QB. It's the only thing that matters for the same reason it sucks that this is the same thing as last year.  This needs to be determined, and if they can't determine it, then it's still telling the team the answer, just not the one they want to hear. As right now we're in the ultimate QB purgatory, a position that dooms franchises for years.  Just look at a team like the Cardinals, who extended a better QB and it still screwed them over and haven't had a contending team in a long time. People get too caught up on wins and losses when evaluating players, particularly QBs.  When people look at the final record and use that as a reason to want to extend a QB or not is just a fools errand.  If we had lost 2-3 more games last year because we didn't make a last second FG, I genuinely wonder if we would have just moved on from Bryce this offseason (like we should have been doing anyways IMHO).
