Taking the 15th ranked player with the #1 overall pick doesn't make much sense...

In what alternate universe is Cam Newton the #1 ranked player in this draft?

There is not an expert out there who even has him in the Top 10 overall prospects in this draft.

This is a prime example of how teams with QB needs will reach and convince themselves that a player is better than he actually is.

I am cautiously optimistic that cooler heads will prevail than exist on this forum.

The guy has epic bust written all over him. You can call Clausen a bust if you want... but you can't call him epic coming from mid second round.

The experienced veteran to steer the ship isn't the sexy solution that most people want here, but it's the right one. You simply don't replace one rookie with another and expect good things to happen. The team needs experience not youth.

The Golden Calf of Bristol won a Heisman and a National Title, had a fantastic work ethic, zero ego and no baggage... but he had some accuracy issues and didn't come from an NFL system. People were SHOCKED that he was taken in the first round.

Yet, the Panthers are going to pick him at #1?!?!?

Why wouldn't we just pick up The Golden Calf of Bristol (with a year of NFL experience) on the cheap from Foxy who wants to unload him?

The Golden Calf of Bristol and Cam don't have the same skill set and aren't the same QB...they don't project the same coming out of college. Cam's ceiling looks to be much higher.....

I honestly believe with the O-line healthy, a consistent running game at the beginning of the season, and a more TE oriented offense, Matt Moore will do a decent job at QB for us this year. There is no need to panic, and draft a project like Newton. After watching that QB camp of his, I know Steve Smith will eat him alive. He shows he has an attitude by willingly disobeying his coaches orders of taking a knee, then tried to justify himself over and over again. We don't need this drama in Carolina. If Smitty doesn't jump on him, you better believe Rivera would if he tried some mess like that. (Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing Newton and Rivera get into it:cool: )

Anyway, we are not that bad at the QB position with Matt Moore behind center. A lot of his problems was making bad decisions, particularly in that Giants game last year, but I blame the coaches for that. The other part of his problem was the bad O-line play. The guy got sacked every four plays or so. Matt Moore is fine for us right now. Next year, do whatever it takes to draft Andrew Luck. (I'm willing to give up to two entire drafts for him)

That is something you can't forecast... and is a part of the whole "risk" factor in drafting a player rated in the teens at #1 overall...

Matt Moore is coming off an pretty significant injury.....he might not be the same QB when he returns. It ain't like a QB of his caliber can afford to function at less than what he has been....

Rivera would be foolish to be all his eggs in the Moore basket. He wants to remain a HC.

He has a higher ceiling b/c they aren't the same QB.....Cam's game appears on face value to transition better than The Golden Calf of Bristol.

Cam might not even reach half of what his ceiling is....I am not claiming him reaching that is certain. Cam is a big risk imo.....it is just worth it if you are Carolina.

Then we should sign a vet just in case Moore is not able to go. Rivera should concentrate on making his defense exceedingly strong, then go after our franchise QB next year in Luck. With Luck at QB, and the best defense in football, we should be competing for a championship within 2-3 years time, if not this year.

That is still not addressing your the future of the position......would be Carolina treading water.

Carolina is in position now to draft any QB they want.....if you believe one can be an impact player in the future you go get him now. Carolina could put off a QB to next year....and find themselves in a position where they can't grab who they wanted. Then they are chumps and fools.

He had the least significant of shoulder surgeries to repair his injury and the surgery often leads to having a stronger arm afterwards. Moore is already throwing, and you bet that the team is aware of how well he is looking doing it, one way or another.

You don't put all your eggs in any basket at this point... Regardless of who you draft.

The key thing is this: Is Cam Newton going to develop into the quarterback you want to build around or not?

If you think he is, you probably want to draft him. If he isn't, you probably don't. Where the Panthers fit? We don't know.

That's true, but it depends on how much they are willing to give up for Luck. I personally would be willing to give up two entire drafts for him, as he is an athletic version of Peyton Manning. Yes he is a gamble, but he is more than worth it. Plus, if I build my defense to be the best (and Rivera is more than capable of doing that), that will help in Luck's room for error.
