"I could care less"- meaning you cared enough to address the situation, but you could care less. It's not an incorrect term.

Negative, the correct phrase is, "I couldn't care less."

Saying you could, in fact, care less negates the very meaning of the thread and is then contradictory.

I don't think so. Because in saying, "I could careless" makes it hypothetical and not so much a contradiction. It's like doing something you don't want to do, but have to anyway.
