Cam Newton vs Steve Smith

don't have none, eh?

Character matters, but not all "character concerns" are equal. Part of why Cam's stuff is so prominent right now is the consideration for #1. Concerns are not all issues, either... For instance, I have concerns about Cam's character but I don't know if those concerns illuminate any actual issues he might have, so I will trust the judgment of the FO.

Certainly, I would welcome Cam Newton to the team even if I am right now not sure it's the best choice. On the other hand, there is no way I would welcome, say, Big Ben to the team right now because I feel that, especially in your quarterback, conduct does matter. Big Ben is apparently trying to redeem himself and change his life. If that is true, I will applaud him. What he was rumored to have done was worse than Cam, by far.

As to Smitty, he's a Panther now... and he's taken his lumps for the stupid poo he's done. He seems to keep his anger problems to the game even if it means decking teammates. This is stupid poo but he knows it's a problem and he has worked on it. This is an issue and there is no excuse for it but I do not view it quite the same as an arrest off the field.

Character Issues

This whole thread is a pitiful attempt by Panthro to compare a player who has been amazing for this franchise to someone who hasn't taken a snap for any franchise. The comparisons are inaccurate on almost every level and it's a disgrace to Panther fans and Steve Smith that you even mention him in the same breath as Cam Newton.

I'm simply saying that we drafted someone with known character issues (those issues continued as a Panther) but he in your own words, "has been amazing for this franchise."

Thanks.

His issues were not character issues. His "issues" helped him become one of the best players in the game. Being overly passionate and fiery is not the same is being a lying, cheating, stealing, disobedient, egotistical, etc etc etc

Try harder

Smith is an asshole, but he is our asshole. With that said, he has done worse than Cam Newton. I love Smitty, and I will love Cam. I am to the point now, where as long as they dont kill, rape, or have many, many run-ins with the law then I dont care.

Black guys get unfairly arrested for anything. Its bad, but its true. Arrests mean nothing to me, convictions do (minus OJ).

I just want to win.

Me and Smitty (my fav). LOOK HOW VIOLENT, HE PUNCHED MY HAND!

BY that standard a guy who assaults people in bar rooms have less character issues than a guy that bought a stolen laptop. Plus there are lots of passionate football players who don't beat up teammates.

I do agree with your second sentence though. It is those same things that make him a great receiver at 5'9.

    • For Bryce’s obvious shortcomings (bad pun), there is upside to his game. This isn’t being a homer or apologists, but I like to consider myself fair in criticism.  He’s far tougher than I ever thought he’d be. I really thought homie would have been broken in half by now. I don’t know how he’s not, but he’s not.  He is prone to turning the ball over early in games which digs a huge hole the team is not built to come back from, but dude DOES come up with crucial first down in crucial situations. It’s NEVER pretty, but he just kind of has the shining. He gets bailed out LOTS, and the team still loses games because of him, but he’s a bit of an enigma. He’s a turnover machine that is clutch in big moments.  He’s a smart/elusive cat. He kind of has to be with his limitations. His audibles are almost always correct and he understands coverages. I don’t see him getting fooled too frequently. His turnovers are almost never the ‘damnit Jake/Cam!’ brand we have been accustomed to. They are ALWAYS due to his size/strength limitations.  Strip sacks that shouldn’t be. Picks that happened because he just don’t got that NFL arm. He is still prone to panicking and the wheels can and do fall off at a much higher rate than his peers.  The team is winning on the backs of the defense, running game and special teams… but they’re winning, and unbelievably 1 game behind Tampa. As long as this is happening and Bryce doesn’t go full meltdown, Dave is going to keep him in. He is not getting pulled.
    • This was a terrible podcast. A bunch of uninformed homers that had worse takes than the bottom 10% of the Huddle. I listened to a handful of podcasts this past offseason in search of new Panthers material since John Ellis doesn't do his pod anymore and The 4 Man Rush don't either. Immediately deleted it after the handful I listened to. Truly terrible.
    • The NFC South was so bad it sent a team with a losing record to the Playoffs that year. Wilks had players playing hard at the end but let’s not act like that was a good season. That season hurts even more now that we see in hindsight how good our QB situation was. We just didn’t know it.
