NFL motion for appeal of stay denied

No, trades and signings can not begin until the NFL opens the league year. And the NFL can not open the league year until they put into place rules governing the league year. And based on the latest challenge by the NFLPA the league is going to be forced to open the market.

So unless the league is ready and able to put those rules into place then the league year can not start in time for the draft.

I guess it could happen in an hour but I doubt it as previous reports have said that the NFL had no prior plans for this situation. But that could also mean they are going with an open market which could be in place in an hour.

They can't drag their feet for too long... if not for the lockout, which the court has lifted, the new league year would have already started and there would be FA and trades right now, so how can the owners justify not starting the new league year right away?

Maybe they can argue it will cause them hits to their money and team if chaos is unleashed before they're certain what the appellate court's decision is? I'm not so sure what their basis for holding on would be, and it probably wouldn't hold up in court either way, but best believe they'll hold out for as long as they can.

It's more like: Good luck finding a liberal judge that's NOT going to rule in favor of a union.

This is why the owners feel confident that it will be overturned on appeal (because they will be standing in front of conservative judges).

Doesn't matter, conservatives will have a very tough time over turning her ruling.

I fully expect them to put in to place the same rules from the previous year.

I also expect the union to try to challenge those rules as an anti-trust violation. There's no telling how that will turn out though.

Usually I'd agree, and probably would have before Judge Nelson put out that massive opinion, but I'm not so sure it's going to be overturned. She made a strong case as to why the lockout isn't legal, and outlined what the 8th Circuit would have to disagree with in order to overrule her decision.

If I had to place percentages on it, I'd give it a 35-40% chance it gets overturned. Really wouldn't be too surprised either way.

Short term this is a good thing as it gets things going, but long term it could be devastating.

My hope is that the owners concede and come back to the negotiating table.

Owners arent the ones who left the table. The players need to comeback. NFL will use the rules from last year until the appeal is taken care of. Can go on for a year or 2.

    • Exactly He's played two seasons and started 28 games. He's well beyond the point of being able to point to 2 or 3 games and being able to say, "THAT is the QB he is and will be in the future" Of course he can get there, but anyone trying to use just those couple of games to rank his place amongst the games QB's today and their full career's worth of playing at that level, is just asinine. Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, Burrow, Hurts, Herbert, Daniels, Stafford, Goff, Geno, Purdy, Baker, Love, Dak, Tua, Kyler, Lawrence That's 17 QB's right there that have played better over their careers than Bryce has played at his best.  And I'm not saying they're all studs or guys I'd want to be our QB moving forward, Tua for example I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole, but his body of work is a million times better than Bryce's has been. It's also not including any of the other QB's drafted in 2023/2024 other than Daniels. So again, say you believe in Bryce, say you think he's going to prove he can and should be our QB of the future, that's all fair and totally fine. But nobody can say he's been an above average QB in his career thus far, it's just an asinine notion.
    • I'd think we could get one of those from Dallas for... whatever.
