Final Mock Drafts...

Ok everyone submit your final prediction on what the panthers will do/should do during the draft. We'll see who knows the team best. Here's mine

1st Round (Pick 1): Cameron Newton QB Auburn...I may not totally agree with it but this is a done deal guys. No one is trading up and they are sold on him to lead the franchise. If you disagree then you are in serious denial.

3rd Round (Pick 65): Jerrel Jernigan WR Troy... I actually expect a little trade action going on here and with the 4th rounder as bait. I think we trade up to grab Jernigan or hope he falls. This guy is a Steve Smith clone and could come in a work out of the slot next to LaFell and Gettis. He is a big time playmaker that doesn't have to learn how to be a wide receiver.

3rd Round (Pick 97): Jerrell Powe DT Ole Miss...Whoa, not who you would expect but I love this pick and I really think this is the kind of guy they want. He is a big run stuffer and could free up Beason, Johnson, and Davis. You stick Landri next to him and it wouldnt be a bad combo.

4th Round (Pick 98): Jonathon Barksdale OT LSU...I really don't think we keep this pick but if we do Barksdale or maybe a CB are perfect fits right here. I had a tackle earlier in the 3rd until Smitty decided to bail. It's imperative that we have a plan at tackle if Otah doesn't come back and Schwartz is fine at RG

5th Round (Pick 132): Rashard Carmichael CB VT...This would be a perfect fit if he falls to the 5th round. I love this kid...his raw but he makes plays and loves to tackle. I think with some coaching he could be a starter by the end of the year and kick Munnerlyn back inside.

6th Round (Pick 166): Ross Homan OLB Ohio St...This was a tough pick to predict but Rivera keeps mentioning linebackers almost as if they know someone won't be back. Homan isn't a speedster but he has a nose for the ball and has good instincts.

6th Round (Pick 203): Cecil Thorton DT Southern Arkansas...Been getting a lot of buzz lately about being a small school sleeper and we all know Hurney just loves those guys.

7th Round (Pick 244): Colin Baxter OL Arizona...Rivera pointed out OL as a definite need and this guy has experience at the interior positions. May not make the roster but could be a decent backup to Kalil.

Ok...there's my final mock. Let's see who can do better.

How do you go from may not make the roster but could be a decent backup to Kalil who is a pro-bowl center?

It's always a numbers game...just because a player gets cut doesnt mean he is a bad player. Jovan Haye, Tony Brown, and Jarred Bush are perfect examples of that. But all things considered I guess I should have used "or" instead.

I was just wondering. :) Yeah it always hurts to see dudes get cut and make it other places... I would like to see DT, CB, OL addressed in this draft. A TE maybe (I hate drafting TE), and I really want to stay away from WR, even with Steve Smith possibly leaving. Nobody in the later rounds will help us more than a vet in FA (when it happens) so dont waste a pick. As to who and where... I have no idea, because once Luck did not delcare, I stopped caring.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
