Which Team Had the Best Draft?

Lions will suck as usual. Didn't address any actual needs, and the QB will still be killed behind that horrendous line. They had a great D-line last year and yet their defense was still average at best. The best D-line can only cover up the worst secondary in the league so much, and I think their D-line will REALLY be susceptible to overpursuing.

I'd give their draft a C. Pretty average.

Lions only gave up 27 sacks, which was 6th. seems like it should be higher than that. And if thats so, then it could be Stafford. If he doesn't make it through 2011 without getting hurt, then they are going to have a huge problem on their hands.

Stafford hardly played last season. Seems whoever they plugged in there put up huge numbers. When you got Megatron, Jahvid Best, and Petigrew it makes things a lil easier. They also picked up pretty damn good RB and WR in this draft if I'm not mistaken.

The team aint bad. I dunno about playoffs just yet, the O-Line and Secondary is still very suspect.

Steelers - Cameron Heyward, Marcus Gilbert (Pouncey's old friend), two top 15 CBs in Brown and Allen, Chris Carter who was a STEAL... very nice stuff.

Browns - Phil Taylor, Jabaal Sheard, Greg Little, Jordan Cameron, Owen Marecic, Jason Pinkston, Buster Skrine... also killed in that trade back and extra points for it being Atlanta.

Chiefs: Jon Baldwin, Rodney Hudson, and Justin Houston are all great value and positions of need. Jerrell Powe is the NT of the future if he can stop being stupid. Ricky Stanzi can also develop behind Cassel if he ever shits the bed.

Texans - JJ Watt and Brooks Reed beef up their front 7 as they transition to a 3-4. Brandon Harris and Rashad Carmichael are both top 15 corners. Really helped their D a lot.

Giants - Lots of steals. Prince Amukamara, Marvin Austin, Jerrel Jernigan, Greg Jones, Tyler Sash... all should have probably been picked earlier but fell to NY.

Saints - Cameron Jordan and Mark Ingram are both excellent picks. Johnny Patrick is one of the top corner prospects too. Greg Romeus will be a steal if he gets past his injuries. Martez Wilson was a very good pick too.

Bucs - This banks on Clayborn and Bowers getting rid of any potential health risks because that would be a sick duo. Luke Stocker was a nice pick up who could kill in two tight end packages. Ahmad Black and Mason Foster were good picks as well. Probably should have grabbed some OL though.

I think the Giants had the best draft in my opinion.

The Patriots draft was pretty middle of the road, their first four picks seemed like reaches to me (Solder and Dowling are good, but taken higher than projected), the Cannon pick was a big gamble, maybe he'll be able to do something in two years, maybe not. Lee Smith is just a blocking TE, doesn't seem to be any pass catching potential. The last two picks I haven't heard of, can't comment on them. Their best pick was Mallett, and that's only because they will probably be able to flip that late 3rd round pick into a 1st or 2nd in a couple years. Of course their trading for future picks was good. But the picks they actually chose, I don't like.

Saints had a good draft too, even though they had no mid round picks.

Lions had an intriguing first pick, should turn out well for them. I still don't like Fairley, but beside Suh is probably the best place for him in the league. Young and Leshoure are good players, but seem like luxuries for a team that can't afford luxuries yet.

Cowboys, bears, Rams, Chiefs and Texans had solid drafts too.

In all, I think the Giants and Saints had the best drafts. Atlanta, Seattle, Oakland, Jacksonville had the worst. San Diego's started out bad, but got better at the end. Liuget as a 3-4 end? What?

I'd have to say

5. Minnesota - Aside from Ponder, they got great value in the rest of the draft.

4. Cleveland - Loved the value at most rounds. Marecic blocking for Hillis could be downright scary.

3. Green Bay - For having the last pick, the Packers KILLED it. Most of their pics will be contributing this year.

2. NY Giants - Major beneficiaries of the QB run, as guys they never dreamed of getting fell. Tyler Sash may end up one of the huge steals.

1. Detroit - Suh and Fairley may be the best interior line RIGHT now. LeShoure and Young make the offense even more scary. If they can shore up their line in free agency, whenever that is - they're a Top 5 offense.

I actually like our draft. Liuget was very disruptive at the end of last year - if he can do that, I have no issue with him at the 5-tech. Gilchrist is a jack of all trades in the DBfield and could take over for Jammer down the road. Brown is another solid option as a WR. Todman fits the mold of most AJ/Butler RBs. LT, Turner, Sproles, and Mathews all finished in the Top 3 in the NCAA at least once. He'll be a good option to replace Sproles and if Mathews/Tolbert go down, I'd have no problem with him getting a bigger load. Schilling will be a good depth guy at g-T

Yea, I thought overall the Chargers draft was good. The Liuget pick still has me scratching my head. The guy is prototypical 4-3 DT, he's not tall like a typical 3-4 end, he's not big enough for 3-4 NT, just seems Cameron Jordan would have been a better pick...

Yeah, Jordan was my 1a. option (after Watt) for the 18th pick. NO also got Wilson (who I wanted @ 50 or 61).

I really don't think the Falcon's trade is that bad, now that I got the time to think about it a bit more. In fact, it's probably a bigger risk to draft a QB in the first round. Put it this way, if Cam/Locker/Gabbert/Ponder busts, it's gonna take a good 3 years. Teams don't just give up on 1st round QB's that easily. If Julio busts, the Falcons still have a top team and they are only screwed for 2 years, and that's just limited to the draft. They can still win on the field. Really not that bad.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
