Who will the Panthers bring in to help on offense?

The backups that saw significant time because of injury that year were Mackenzy Bernadeau and Geoff Schwartz. The same guys that got plugged in this year. I think it's a pretty apt comparison. When they were put in last year, the running game was just as good if not better. This year the whole line disappointed and actually the running game got better as a whole after Wharton was hurt. I don't think that's an indictment of Gross, Wharton, or the line as a whole. I think it reflects the necessity of a passing game and, perhaps, a decline of the play at fullback (Hoover to Fiametta). Like I said, I haven't broken down film, but I think we might look to upgrade the position.

Gross started all 16 games as well.

confused the 2 seasons.. why I thought Kalil was the only starter to remain..

the right side of the line killed us this year.. until we moved Schwartz inside, they were a real liability.

even so, Fiametta started 1 year.. I trust players deserve more than 1 year to grow into their positions .. and I would also have to go back and watch games (and real film, which I don't have access to) before I decide all of that falls on Fiametta's shoulders..

I would also blame a lot of QB and namely Playcalling into this before I assumed 1 player had such a drastic effect.

besides, seems to me he was getting a lot of praise at one point in the season. I actually forgot about him quite a bit last year due to the atrocious QB play and playcalling from Davidson.

maybe the coaches do take a look at FB, but I think there would be a lot of reasons why they wouldn't.. unless of course he was that bad. Just doesn't seem like that would be the 1st thing to assume.

I combined both seasons when thinking of Gross.. that's why I thought Kalil was the only starter to remain..

maybe the coaches do take a look at FB, but I would think it's more logical to take a look at our QB play + playcalling + OLine play (namely the right side of the line) as to why our run game suffered before I take a look at upgrading our FB..

also, I remember Fiametta brought on some praise at the beginning of the year.. I kind of forgot about him as the season went on since QB Play and dumb playcalling was the biggest reason (IMO) why we suffered.

why won't we be using FBs?

was Chud not a user of them in Clev?

FB Vickers was a Pro Bowl alternate in Chud's big year in Cleveland being the lead for blocker for Lewis.....

I have a feeling people expect to see a few more 3 receiver looks, taking out the FB.. especially if we are trying to acclimate Newton by using more shotgun (which the great offenses are using more of now a days)..

I don't think FB will never see the field, but there are a lot of formations I think will open up the field and help Newton along..

at least this is my line of thinking..

What is wrong with you people? Braylon Edwards is the biggest fail-hands overrated wide receiver there is. Would MUCH rather have Steve Breaston, Malcolm Floyd, or VJax.

Hell, I'd rather have Owen Daniels, Zach Miller, or Mercedes Lewis (also impending UFA's) than Braylon.

Agreed. Extremely overrated!

QUOTE=rayzor;3131991]braylon edwards targets/receptions/drops

2008: 138/55/19

2009: 94/45/6

2010: 102/53/4 (worth noting that stats, inc. has him only dropping 2)

anyone seeing a trend here?

sure, you look at a 3 year stretch and throw all the numbers in a blender and it doesn't look pretty. you take each year on it's own merit and see whats going on and...well...i'm impressed with the growth.

I agreed with you until I saw this post. Now he seems to be new and improved

Hate to say it guys, but I don't see us bringing anyone in with the exception of a back-up QB if Steve Smith stays. Reality is we have plenty of offensive weapons. A coaching staff that cares and knows how to utilize the weapons we have will help a lot. Don't forget we still have one of the best Olines in football when healthy, Double Trouble, Smitty(if he stays), and a host of young wideouts that have a promising future.

one thing about that right side...geoff schwartz actually ended up doing pretty good at RG.

from an article at pff...

if otah comes back healthy then an oline of gross/wharton/kalil/schwartz/otah might be good.

that said, i do want us to address RG and maybe OT in FA. i don't trust our Oline to stay healthy. we have to be stacked there in a big way if our offense is going to do any good. ideally i would like to see us with 9-10 Oline on the roster, just to make sure we have solid depth. i want us to go after marshal yanda (who can do well at RG or RT) and either justin blalock or harvey dahl (both from the falcons).

i would also look into jared gaither and see if he's healthy. the price could be nice for an LT of his caliber. could be good insurance if gross gets knocked out. maybe sean locklear from the seahawks. great in pass protection but sucks at run blocking. aside from yanda could be the best RT in FA.

Thanks for the article. We need help on the OL .I do not think we can count on Otah at all.We need help on the OL if we are still going to run the ball and protect our qbs

Gettis and LaFell are not weapons on offense and Shockey may or may not play a full season. Our main weapons consist of an old receiver (Smitty) and 2 stud RBs.. I would hardly call that full of weapons.

we need a solid receiver brought in.. whether Smitty stays or leaves.

    • Panthers sign OT Rasheed Walker Terms: One year, up to $10 million Grade: A The price of this deal might be the most shocking of free agency thus far. Walker was widely considered the best free agent tackle this year and was expected to receive a large contract. But his market developed very slowly, so he has signed a one-year deal with a maximum value of $10 million -- meaning the base value is below that -- per NFL Network. For context, my free agency contract model projected a deal averaging $21.8 million for Walker. Instead, it's a short-term commitment for less than half that. And the Panthers are the beneficiaries. Carolina entered this offseason with a possible need at left tackle after Ikem Ekwonu suffered a patellar tendon rupture in the playoffs that put his 2026 season in question. It's also the last year of his contract. The Panthers signed Stone Forsythe as an insurance plan already in free agency, but once Walker's market fell it seemed like they felt adding him was well worth it, too. Our win rate metrics consider Walker to be a solid player. Last season in Green Bay, he was in the 85th percentile among tackles in pass block win rate, though only 22nd percentile in run block win rate. He was in the 69th percentile and 48th percentile in those two metrics in 2024, respectively. Given that Dan Moore Jr. received $20.5 million per year from the Titans last year most -- myself included -- thought Walker would walk away with more than that. Perhaps the struggles of Moore (who wasn't great last season) contributed to Walker's market being cooler than expected, a theory that ESPN's Jeremy Fowler suggested. Walker was also arrested two months ago at LaGuardia Airport in New York for allegedly trying to check-in with a firearm that he had a license for in Wisconsin but not New York. Either way, teams felt differently about Walker than most on the outside thought. But he's a heck of an add for the Panthers at this price. While his run-game contributions might be far from perfect, a weak pass protector at tackle can sink a passing game. Even if this is only a one-year arrangement, Walker should be able to help keep Bryce Young upright
    • Fantastic signing. If he is good, this will make next offseason really interesting. I would imagine that Morgan would try to extend Walker and convince Ikey to move to the right side to replace Moton. This also opens up options at 19 at lot instead of forcing a tackle. I'm not a fan, but I'm definitely more open to Morgen drafting Sadiq now, but there is also Peter Woods, and even some like Dillon Thieneman is now in the mix. Hell, I'm still for another off ball LB.
    • sure, but Panthers are theoretically in their win now window. Their first rounder needs to be a day one starter
