Black Snake or Cottonmouth?

stopped by the parents and just about poo a brick when I almost stepped on 2 fairly large black snakes in their garage.. (about an inch in diameter, so maybe 3.5 feet?)

if they are black snakes, then I don't give a fug and they can do their thing.. but as little as I come across snakes in general, I'm concerned if they were cottonmouths since they were white underneath..

their head was more oblong than triangular or spoon shaped.. I also didn't notice any white markings on their head other than their bottom being all white. from what I've always heard, most venomous snakes do not cohabitate with each other, but I don't know how true or relevant that really is..

If they were solid black, I doubt they're cottonmouths. Probably rat snakes or racers.

That being said, I almost wrecked this morning because I freaked out when a huge ass snake slithered in front of my car. And yes, my husband has already told me I'm safe in my car and I should have just ran over it. I freaked. Don't judge me.

sunbunny, they were a little chunky.. which makes me think they are just typical rat snakes.

I saw 3 down in Florida last year that were skinny, and fast as hell.. I thought those were cottonmouths. also, appeared to have more of a triangular head. however, they could have been racers for all I know..

I really have no idea between the various black snakes that exist, other than if the head is bigger than the body, white markings on head, and vertical eyes most likely mean poisonous..

Get one of them to pose next to these pics so you can identity it.

after looking at that site, they have to be rat snakes.. glad, otherwise I should have been bitten, which is always a bummer.

I was mowing the lawn a couple weeks ago, and happened upon a little grey dude with patterning I wasn't too sure about. He looked like a baby, but I found him right up against the wall of the house and didn't want a poisonous snake growing up in my back yard. I thought he might be a baby copper head.

So, I cornered him with a spatula and grilling prongs, caught him by the back of the head, and gently put him in a plastic container with a lid

I brought him in the house and used the search above to check him out. Using that search, I finally figured out he was a harmless brown snake (Storeria dekayi)

He was non-poisonous, so I tossed him back into the woods behind my property line. Hopefully he's out there now eatin some bugs.

said it was a rat snake..

amazing how many colors a black snake can have (based on these sites)..

had a similar experience cutting the grass.. too many nonpoisonous snakes have the same markings as poisonous.. this one looked just like a copperhead, but turned out was harmless. have seen quite a few like this.

    • 100%. And these same people will claim you have an agenda. You can't have it every way. We had the lowest rated defense in the league last year. Statistically the worst ever. By PFF grades (for whatever that's worth- but they are readily accepted, used, and conveyed by most "reputable" sources), the defense was the worst ever. Not only that, PFF rated our receiving corp the worst in football last season. The absolute worst... out of 32 teams. Which is why regardless of the lip service Canales and Morgan paid to the current guys, they knew it would be criminal not to give Bryce more help. People fixating on team stats and not taking these things into context are stupid, plain and simple, and I'm for one thankful they're not running this team (or probably anything for that matter bc they obviously can't discern reality. Again, going back to the eyeball test these Narrative Nancies seem to hate so much, did they not see the windows Bryce was putting balls into? Have the generally not watched much NFL? Please, please show me the film where all these NFL QBs are making throws like this to this point Bryce was "below average" down the stretch compared to them. Bryce made more wow throws in that 3 game stretch of the Bucs, Chiefs, and Eagles than every other QB combined in all the years since since Cam got hurt I genuinely am baffled by people that can watch throws like that and act like it's nothing. I guarantee you Steve Spagnola, Todd Bowles, and and Vic Fangio didn't think it was nothing after watching the little guy torch them with players those teams would be embarrassed to trot out at the skill position players. The national media spent all year making excuses for Mahomes not having elite weapons when he had multiple 1st & 2nd round talents at the skill positions along with future HoFers in Kelce and Hopkins. Bryce wasn't throwing for 300 yards every week with David Moore and Adam Theilen in spite of jaw dropping throws and you want to say the guy played below average. For those people, again, we ain't watching the same sport. And the name calling doesn't change that... The vitriol and projection... it's off the effing charts with these people.
    • "Well you see if you remove this terrible game that terrible game this other terrible game and then focus on these games you'll see he's actually one of the better QB's in the league and he's actually as good as Jayden Daniels". My god this place is delusional. I love it.
