For Matt Moore: Bad News and Good News

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

First, the bad news.

For those who were around early last year, you might remember I posted a couple of time about how the Panthers website was talking up Matt Moore's play while acknowledging poor play from Jake Delhomme. This I took as a sign that Moore would likely go into next season as the starter. It turned into a debate with GMan is Dumb, which he lost in spectacular fashion and has since departed or renamed himself.

Fast forward to this season, and if you want to go back to the Panthers site as a sign of things to come, here's one sign that's not so good: Turner following father's footsteps

The article describes Scott Turner's path to his current position as Panthers offensive QC. It includes this blurb:

Turner turned his attention to coaching. He served as a graduate assistant at Oregon State in 2005 and coached for two years on the high school level before accepting an offensive assistant position at the University of Pittsburgh in 2008.

What's significant about that? Turner's job at Oregon State involved working with the offense, and specifically with the starting QB for Oregon State that season, a young fellow by the name of Matt Moore.

Up till now, Panther officials have mentioned Moore plenty - and even tendered him a fairly significant offer - but now a story in which it would be perfectly natural to mention him gets printed, and no mention at all. I went into the story expecting to see that discussed, but Turner's time at Oregon State is little more than a transitional sentence. The prior connection with Moore? Left out.

So, is neglecting that particular little detail just a whiff on the part of site writer Bryan Strickland, or was that fact deliberately left out - or edited out - to avoid mention of Moore?

You tell me.

There is good news for Moore though. via Russ Lande of The Sporting News: Matt Moore might be best young QB on free-agent market

BOTTOM LINE: Moore is perhaps the most intriguing QB available this offseason. For a player who was undrafted out of Oregon State and then cut by the Cowboys in 2007, Moore has shown the ability to produce. In 2009, he was 4-1 as a starter and had a passer rating of 98.5. Although Moore battled through injuries last season, he still played well in two games (against the 49ers and Rams). He showed the same passing skills in those games that he had displayed in 2009, when he made a case that he could become a good starting QB. Moore was a restricted free agent last offseason, and with four years of experience, he could be an unrestricted free agent this year. With the unsettled labor situation, however, he may end up as a restricted free agent again. Based on film study, he might be the best of the young quarterbacks available in the 2011 free-agent pool. And if he gets back to his pre-injury form, he can develop into a very good starter in time. Moore was expected to be fully healthy sometime in May, so he should be ready to play for whatever team signs him in 2011.

Lande says Moore has good accuracy and a strong arm, but acknowledges that he's had struggles with injuries and hasn't always done well when pressured. Still, he rates Moore overall as a 7.9 on a 9 point scale and says he may be one of the more "intriguing" prospects out there when free agency finally starts.

So for Moore, he may indeed have a chance to prove that he can be a full time starter. It just might not be with the Panthers.

I've believed pretty much all along that Moore would get a shot to compete in training camp. Hurney talked about him as someone they definitely wanted back and when he referred to his issues last year, he never mentioned "struggles", only "injuries".

Add in that when you look at their respective skill sets, Moore is actually much better suited to run a Coryell offense than Clausen is.

Still, Moore was an undrafted free agent and Clausen was a high draft pick, a recent one at that.

The failure to mention Moore could indeed just be a miscue on the part of the writer, or maybe something he didn't feel was relevant.

Or... :sosp:

I don't see Matt Moore leaving as bad news. Afterall, it'd mean he'd be taking TRD with him.

I thought TRD was Matt.

I really do like Matt Moore. Flame me if you want but he was thrown into a bad situation with minimal development time and performed well.

As for liking TRD, meh :D

Agree 100%......that just amplifies how dumb it will be for Carolina to waste a roster spot this season on Clausen. Clasuen is going to waste a spot this year and then they will move on......scrapping him in camp and giving Moore a spot imo would be the wiser move.

Time to admit Carolina made a mistake drafting QBs during a lameduck coaches last year. Made no sense then.......the time to go after young QBs was once a new staff was brought on.

Generally not a good idea to give up on a rookie after only one year in a bad situation.

With that said, it wouldn't exactly kill me if we wound up keeping Moore over Clausen. I just don't expect it to happen.

Sad reality is that the lame duck coach who didn't like Clausen is gone. The GM who did (and apparently still does) is right where he was last year.

I'm not on the "fire Hurney" bandwagon, mind you, but this is one of those times I wish he'd at least consider cutting bait.

I love Matt Moore. I thought he would save our franchise much like Delhomme did before he threw 5 picks in the Arizona game. He just never materialized due in part to injuries. :-( I'd like to see us retain him if possible, but if not I will wish him the best elsewhere. I'm a fan of the game, so I'll always follow former players and players that I like in college! There's nothing like the NFL!

If Moore leaving means TRD goes too... Then I hope we can get rid of Moore ASAP! Lol

I'm just kidding!

generally a good idea to give up on a bad QB OR a player who doesn't fit what you do though......

I feel bad for both Pike and Clausen. Carolina should not have drafted any QBs considering they knew Fox was leaving (netiher fit Fox) and it was an uknown what direction Carolina's offense would go.

Me wanting Clausen to stay or for Carolina to just move on came down to the new coach and offense......I think the wisest move is to move on. Teams have moved on from 2nd round QBs in the recent history and I think Carolina should join that group.

Vet/Cam/Moore (regardless of order) sounds more promising for this offense than anything that includes Clausen. No matter how hard he works he just doesn't fit........and NFL success/failure is heavily dependant on being drafted by a team where you fit.

I think we have to have some veteran presence in there. Otherwise we're just too young at quarterback.

You could make an argument for Moore as that veteran presence, but what you really want in that role is someone who's done it for way longer than Moore has, and had a higher overall success rate.

Much as I like Moore, I have my doubts that he fits in this year's puzzle.

Gonna have a hard time finding someone in FA that has a better W/L percentage than Moore. More experience starting will be a little easier but not much.

I think someone goes after him for a starting gig in FA. Something we can't offer him. Good luck Matt I will always be a fan.

As for Pickles? Who knows, hopefully he can be a competent back up.

    • You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.
    • THANKS my guy! Keeping up with this threads theme, if I view a thread and there's only 20 posts and some time passes. If I see there's one new post and read the name; @Dave Gettleman's Shortsis among the chosen few that I will reopen that thread just to see what you posted.    Thanks again, plus not just a scout, thats scotty mccloughans son?!?!? If not for the deep claws of booze, scotty is among the best talent finders this league has recently had. Last I heard he ran a consulting business. Caden could be one of those who's on a early path to being a GM in the future. I was a big fan of his dad, dam shame about booze demon ruining his career.
