Goodell still says fans want 18 games

Worst Commissioner ever, and I stand by that. This guy just won't stop adding more fuel to the fire. I hope this isn't one of the issues they're arguing over in mediation cause it's pointless. Lockout will never get resolved with this fool bringing this up.

“We do think it is attractive to season-ticket holders. I hear that all of the time from our season-ticket holders,” Goodell said on a conference call with Titans season ticket holders. "We have not abandoned our position on that. We do think it is the right thing for the game. It improves the quality of what we do, and it improves the value for you as season-ticket holders. … We do think it is a benefit for everybody, but we want to do it the right way, and we want to do it responsibly. That includes the players’ perspective.”

I have no problem with 18 games, and he is right season tickets holders would rather pay for tickets to real games, not preseason games. Thats all they are doing, not "adding" 2 games, just trading 2 worthless preseason games out for 2 regular season games... that count. Don't think they are making it up, the owners do send out surveys to SEASON ticket holds...

Its more fans in the seats, buying hotel rooms to concessions. More televised games (advertisement, t.v. deals). Players and owners make more.

If this 18 game proposal is the reason why we cant get a CBA then I do not want

No, the owners already said they would not do it, til the players agree...dbag wants to see the books of a private (which does not have to publicly show their books) company (the NFL)...thats why they can't get a deal done... dbag wants 50/50 without taking expenses in to consideration...and would get a woody, if he can take it to the Supreme Court...

The Packers are publicly traded...they do have to open their books...and they do...

if demaurice smith's personality was more like goodell's, we'd have a deal already.

goodell isn't the problem here. it's the litigation only mentality of smith.

While I can at least in part agree with that, I still really wish he'd let this 18 game thing die and be buried.

I've never seen anything that made me believe this is something "the fans want". Just the opposite, honestly.

When Goodell claims he's pushing it for the sake of the fans, he makes himself look stupid.

Also, the owners want them to take a worse deal for no reason. They are both stubborn and ruining this season.

if they were actually negotiating/talking about things, i seriously doubt that this would be something seen as a hard and fast requirement of a deal. it could be negotiated out easily.

gooddell is still acting like this could all be discussed in a meeting between the two sides. smith will never allow that meeting to take place unless forced.

it's the owners fault they got into the situation, but it's smith's fault they haven't worked something out.

Are you sure? He is going by SEASON ticket holders, not single game ticket buyers or ppl that sit at home watching the boob tube for free...

Think its short sighted to think alot of SEASON tickets holders don't want it. I have heard that for quite a few years prior to this lockout mess, SEASON tickets hated have to pay for preseason games that mean nothing and few people go (season ticket holders or single ticket buyers)....

Agree that Smith is the prime mover behind the whole "take them to court" strategy. No great surprise that a lawyer thinks litigation is the answer (and I'll laugh my rump off if that ultimately backfires).

No argument there. I just wish the whole 'expanded season' idea would fade away forever (and take the 'international expansion' and 'need a team in L.A.' crap with it).

There's really nothing to work out. The owners want a better deal, and the players don't want to give anything up. You can't just talk that out. So they are going to have to be told by a court who has the advantage.

From the article...

But here’s the thing, and Yahoo! Sports’ Doug Farrar points it out: Goodell has participated in 19 conference calls like this, and after reading transcripts of the talks, hardly any fan has mentioned wanting what Goodell says the fans want.

Also pretty much no denying the idea is almost universally hated by the players.

    • No, it will be a raw 6'7" 17-year-old European who just played basketball for the first time in March and who the idiot GM "had first on our board." He'll play the whole G-League season, get in 42 games for the Hornets and average 1.1 ppg on 35% shooting. Been there, seen that.
    • We missed on Burns at his peak value. That’s the problem with trading for picks 2-3 years away (which people were convinced the Rams would suck by now and these would be higher picks btw). Each year away the pick is the further in value it drops. Fitt was clearly hired based on turning us around quickly. It’s one of the many reasons tanking isn’t really a thing as our player JJ is telling you in this original article. It would take the whole organization from the owners down admitting they aren’t winning soon with Burns and picks 2-3 years away having more value because that’s when we are still rebuilding. It would only make sense if Fitt had a longer leash and would more than likely be the ones making these picks anyway which you wouldn’t want. The question is would you rather have those Rams picks with the strong possibility of Fitt still being here or would you rather Fitt try to “win now” like he did and expedite his firing? Altering the timeline would affect more than just the Rams picks.
    • I dont buy the idea that it would create more competitive games Given this: Seed Current Format Record Proposed Open Seeding Record 1 Lions 15–2 Lions 15–2 2 Eagles 14–3 Eagles 14–3 3 Buccaneers 10–7 Vikings 14–3 4 Rams 10–7 Commanders 12–5 5 Vikings 14–3 Rams 10–7 6 Commanders 12–5 Buccaneers 10–7 7 Packers 11–6 Packers 11–6 That would mean Wild Card round would have been Eagles (14/3) v  Pack(11/6) Vikings(14/3) v Bucs(10/7) Commanders(12/5) v Rams(10/7) Instead of Eagles (14/3) v  Pack(11/6) Bucs(10/7) v Commanders(12/5) Rams(10/7) v Vikings(14/3) Then with the reseed it would mean that highest remaining seed would always draw the lowest remaining team.
