CAR: Owner says he's not worried about Cam Newton missing time

Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson said that he's not overly concerned about the instruction QB Cam Newton is missing out on as the lockout lingers. 'The Panthers are going to be like everybody else and (Newton's) going to be like everybody else, so we all have to adjust and deal with what we have to deal with,' Richardson said. 'I'm not really overly stressed out about it, personally.'

Chalk this up as pure sound bite bluffing. I'm actually impressed Richardson was able to keep a straight face saying this. Nobody is buying what Richardson is selling here as missing time is a huge problem for Newton and his development. If there's one thing to remember about this year being different it's that the teams with veteran leadership at key positions have a giant advantage over teams like Carolina with Newton at quarterback. The longer this lockout lasts, the more pronounced this advantage will be. We're always leery of buying into rookie hype for skill positions but this year is even more so. Be very careful.

Newton's been working out with former NFL QBs Ken Dorsey and Chris Weinke. During this time he's also been studying the team's playbook as he prepares to win the starting job for the Panthers. Newton is set to join his teammates for player-organized workouts next week in Charlotte.

I have guarded hope for newton, regardless of the laber situation.

That being said, our coaches will put the team in position to win. Then we will see if other teams have an advantage (which I don't feel they do).

Still, I think we'll need to be patient with Newton this season. Mistakes this season should be considered his learning curve for the new system. If he's not catching on in a few years, that's a different story.

JR has bigger problems to worry about than Newton. I can assure you that teams like the Ravens are the most nervous b/c they are older and their window is quickly closing to win.

I actually think that Newton is his biggest problem.

Not only will he be behind from the lockout, but the #1 draft pick is unsigned and risking injury by particpating in the workouts. Granted, the risk is low assuming no contact is involved... but this is the type of thing that keeps an owner or at least a GM up at night.

a good owner will trust they have hired the right people to take care of business and let them do the worrying.

not much that can be done right now than is being done. why worry about it?
