good fox sports article on cover 2

Panthers MLB Jon Beason wrote in his personal blog today that he had shoulder surgery on Feb. 12 to repair a torn labrum. He said he initially suffered the injury in October against Arizona, and played through the rest of the season.

Makes his Pro Bowl season that much more remarkable, that he did it one-armed for half the year. He wrote that "when I tackled someone it was almost like throwing a pillow at them.

Beason said he'd "absolutely" be ready for training camp and the first exhibition game. He's going to need the mental reps too, because the Panthers are shifting to a variation of the "Tampa 2" defense which will put increased burdens on him.

Players define a scheme. Both the colts and tampa bay ran a tampa 2 style defense but they were both different. Our variation of tampa 2 or cover 2 will be different than the others, so even though there are generalizations about how the weakness and strengths of the tampa 2 and the cover 2, we still have players on the line and linebackers that are capable of stopping the run.

I would be happy with a cover 2 or Tampa 2 or even a cover 3 if we are aggressive. Zone coverage played like Tampa has over the last several years, would be fine as long as we can pressure the opponent with our front four.

But to play a soft zone like we did too often last year was just dying by degrees. We were so transparent, lining up the same way most of the time allowing the offense to dictate matchups. Playing off the receiver in third and short, failing to respond to zone overloads, cluster sets, hi-lo stretches.

If Meeks is playing to our strengths I hope he allows our guys to play a physical style which should suit our secondary.

cover 2, tampa 2, 2x2, or whatever 2

it masks a weak pass rush.

with the personnel that the panthers have right now, the line can focus on the run, while the secondary can contain the pass..and even buy time for the line to rush the passer.

hello johnson and taylor. this is just what the doctor ordered.

Not really so. In the cover 2 and Tampa 2 you need a good pass rush from your line. Really it masks a poor CB unit. You can have slower CBs because they dont have to play man to man. Like we had in 03. I really doubt we will run a base cover 2 or Tampa 2 if we dont think we can get a good pass rush.

    • Are you now equating best/worst rush defense with best/worst defense? Those are separate things entirely. For rush defense, depending on how you quantify it, he has been largely in the bottom third of the league his entire career as a defensive coordinator.  As you can see, aside from his one year in Denver, he has never been above 20th in yardage. Now, there is context to consider which is most coordinators choose to run on him(24th-32nd ranked in his three year in Carolina). So, if you just simply look at Y/A, it has been a relatively mixed bag. Twice a top 15 defense but twice a bottom 15 defense.  The thing the should make all this good/bad run defense a lot clearer is the right most columns. Evero's defense has always prioritized pass defense and confusing QB's. That's the core of his defensive philosophy, as has been reported relatively widely. As much as there are ample personnel issues on that side of the ball(many of which he contributes to with his below average talent evaluations) his defenses may never be truly elite in rush and pass defense unless they are stocked with defensive talent. Like....his Denver defense that he inherited was. To that point, if you look at all those rankings from the three years Fangio(of whom Evero is a noted disciple) it shows a progression of getting steadily better into the far more elite defense it is now under Vance Joseph. As far as his HC interest, recall that he was a hot commodity after Denver and that cooled significantly after his first two years here. I suppose if you count getting interviews for HC positions as a benchmark for being a good coach(most would not) then he is middle of the packish.
