Cool story- I ran into a former Panthers employee at the gym

I was working out today at the Y and ran into a guy and we started talkin and he has just been layed off by the Panthers. He was the strength and conditioning coach and has been since Fox came to town. I asked him a few questions that were pretty interesting:

I asked him who the strongest player on the team was...His answer was Charles Johnson. That was a shocker for me. I asked him if he thought he would ever be a solid starter and he said that Charles definitely has all of the physical tools to be a great DE but he lacks a little bit mentally. Said that he wasnt the sharpest tool in the shed.

Also asked about Peppers work Ethic? He said Pep works really hard in the weight room. Pep doesnt workout with the team in the offseason but TC and during season he works hard so thats good to hear.

He said that signing Gross was the best move we have ever made. Said he trains hard, studies, is obviously very durable and just an all around great guy to be around.

I could have asked him questions all day but i thought i would let the guy workout...thought i would share the info :cheers2:

I've never really had too many doubts about Pep's conditioning or weight training. He's always been in great condition as far as I know.

I don't even mind that he may be considered a bit pricey...sometimes you need to overpay just a tad because the guy's value to your team pushes the $ up a bit.

It probably was a lower level assistant type guy but he got layed off about 4 weeks ago...he said that because of the economy the position coaches are gonna be taking on more responsibilities to replace people with his position

Yeah go figure cutting staff and paying players more than ever, corporate America just plain out sucks.

    • I'll say 6. I don't know that we learned a whole lot about this team during preseason that we didn't already know. We didn't play the starters enough to really get a feel for what to expect. We had one good drive against the Browns, one 3-and-out and two 3-and-outs against the Texans. That's an extremely small sample size across 3 games regardless of performance. My camp/preseason takeaways: Jalen Coker might be the best WR on this team and is certainly no worse than #2. Nic Scourton is going to be a good player for us. Possibly very good. Bobby Brown was our best free agent addition and will do more to help the defense than anyone. Jack Plummer isn't an NFL QB. Not even a practice squad guy. Having anyone other than Canales and Evero call plays was a really stupid and pointless idea. Our depth is largely non-existent, especially on defense. The three areas we actually DO have depth are on the OL, in the WR corp. and at RB. I can't fathom why Dan Morgan didn't do more to upgrade ILB during the offseason. We better hope Lathan Ransom steps up at FS because if he doesn't we have a massive hole there. For all the hype surrounding Sanders and Evans, Tommy Tremble is still the best TE on the roster. I'm only slightly less enthusiastic going into the regular season than I was a month ago. I think our starters on offense are solid and we should be pretty good there unless Bryce totally regresses. On defense, we're probably bottom 3rd in the league if 100% healthy and significantly worse than that if injuries become an issue. We badly need at least two of our rookies to become high-level players early (ideally one of the pass rushers + Ransom) and at least 2 of our free agent additions (ideally Moehrig + Bobby Brown) to be significant upgrades over last year. Call me pessimistically optimistic 😆
    • 2010 was worse. Not much worse but worse.
    • Lol since 2017 the Panthers are 47-85,    Also since 2017 the Giants are 40-91-1   Lol
