Richardson confident top targets will return

He's already talking to Beason about an extension. ;)

Panthers owner Jerry Richardson said today he is optimistic the team will sign its primary free agent targets as the start of training camp approaches.

Richardson said general manager Marty Hurney is meeting with unrestricted free agent running back DeAngelo Williams today as well as linebacker Thomas Davis about a contract extension. Hurney is also beginning a conversation with linebacker Jon Beason about a contract extension.

"We've said from the beginning we're going to be aggressive but we're going to be aggressive at the right time. That's to sign our own players," Richardson said.

"I would bet Charles Johnson was in the top five free agents in the market. I assume DeAngelo was high. I suspect when this is over, we do have Charles Johnson. I hope we're going to have DeAngelo, we're going to have Thomas (Davis). We're going to be talking to Jon Beason today. We will have probably, very quickly, our core players and we're able to do it because we're willing to be competitive and pay what it takes.

"We have such a compressed length of time. We're moving as fast as we can but I'm optimistic because we want them here."

    • Yuck.  I still kind of like Herbert but these playoff performances are rough....
    • I feel like this was the case with River and McDermott defenses as well, we just had the jimmies and the joes to overcome these deficiencies with all pro players at edge and linebacker positions.  Even then, was extremely frustrated in 2015 when we'd let team come back from 20+ pt deficits playing prevent only to barely win at the end.
    • We need to move on soon and just use Bryce as a bridge to find our next guy. I'd like to see how this offense works with Canales hand picking his own guy. Bryce holds this offense back a lot considering you draft the first pick to carry your team and be your best player. We invested heavily for Bryce and need everything to go right just to have him look like a solid game manager sometimes. When he plays well he can look decent or mid, but when he plays bad he looks like a bottom 5 qb in league (backups included). It's not worth it, especially if we need to pay him soon, which means we have to skimp all over the roster. If the defenses don't hand it to us on a silver platter Atlanta style then we struggle big time. Defenses don't respect the offense at all. With Cam we could have the worst offensive talent and I'd still think we had a shot in any game we played. If Bryce is facing a 3rd and 10 I pretty much wave the white flag and don't think we can make that first down.
