If Clausen loses out, back up in 2012?

Recommended Posts

So if Cam starts most of or the entire year this year, is Clausen's contract # efficient enough that he could be held onto as a back up QB? Anyone think that he could be the back up for a year or two down the line beyond this year since he's under a 4-year deal as it is?

Here's his contract details: http://www.derp/2010/7/28/1592014/jimmy-clausen-contract-details

Doesn't really say what he'll make next year, but wouldn't mind keep him around for a few years after Cam beats him out as a back up in case Cam would ever get hurt.

His base is $490k in 2012 and $575 in 2013.

Doesn't get much cheaper

Thank you, good info here.

So hypothetically.... it wouldn't make the most sense in the world to cut a guy with pedigree, youth, playbook as well as starting NFL experience after this season would it?

If he can be the good soldier in losing his job to Newton.... do we keep him around until his contract is done as a serviceable back-up QB? Might be the smart way to go

Why would you cut him?

He is not in trouble with the law, handled the Cam situation well, and is cheap. Not to mention, he was drafted for a reason. He has talent, just not enough to overcome the terrible coaching job from last season.

Yea, I think Jimmy is a turd... but to be honest if you're thinking for the good of the organization and winning ballgames.... I want this guy on the roster over some of the stiffs collecting paychecks as back-ups in the league. He could prove valuable over the course of a few years and won't cost much. I just hope the coaches know this, and that Jimmy is a good sport about it.

Same reason the Patriots cut there 2nd round QB after a season when he still didn't look to fit in his 2nd camp.....

There is no reason to keep a bad player who doesn't fit what you do.....b/c he is cheap. That makes your roster weak and your team in trouble when the depth is called upon.

Both Rivera and Hurney have expressed support for Clausen. He's fit in fine. He's got more experience than any other 2nd year backup in the league. Sounds like a no-brainer to keep him by your logic.

Company lines....

Nothing about Clausen's play has suggested he has "fit" in. Not being a problem child doesn't matter. Rivera/Chud will give him a chance.....foolish to think they are gonna feel obligated to keep him if he is the same QB that was reportedly taking the field at practice all last season.

Clausen isn't good enough to be a backup for any team in the NFL.....no point settling on him just b/c he is already on our roster. At best he is a #3 right now. Experience being historically bad.....isn't a positive.

    • Basically agree.  He is the one of that bunch that offers upgraded pass catching along with he is supposed to be kind of special.   Then you have the OL and the ideas that if they perform you can have JAG backs and still do well. So okay we could be fine.  But Brooks is important and to me that receiving element sets him apart.  So there sure is something riding on him.     What strikes me as incongruent is people over in Atlanta or those that follow them look at Penix with a third surgery and act like it is no big deal.      And we are on pins and needles over Brooks.  Either they should worry a lot more or we should worry a lot less.
    • I usually go a game or two optimist over the consensus here but this is too early for me to say. I need to see some players on the field.  I am not feeling real optimistic though.
    • Okay as a ‘take CJ’ fan I actually don’t obsess over CJ and Houston, contrary to the narrative.  But I thought I picked up some noise that his OL left a lot to be desired.    Not a single Beyce supporter would judge him harshly if he had a crappy OL. We all know that.    So be fair about it.  A QB needs to be protected.  Especially a guy that gets to his spot and wants to finish the play from there. Which CJ is.
