I know this has been discussed, but why is Gantt no longer a beat writer?

I used to work for the Observer 20 years ago in the sports dept. I filled in on weekends and summer vacations while I was in graduate school. A person I remained friends with said it dealt with ethics, and he led me to beleive the Panthers complained--but that is not confirmed--he did not know for sure. Very hush hush. He has been warned not to discuss it, to accept his new post. I am not sure how the continuation of covering the Panthers and releasing statements that are being picked up by national sources is viewed. He does not claim to be affiliated with any paper, and he has the right. However, there is friction, and he is keeping his name alive until he can find another position.

I asked him if it had anything to do with all the ASU/Armanti Edwards stuff, he said he did not think so, that could be related, but he added that more than a few of us noticed the homerism in his articles. I mentioned that he once wrote a seven-paragraph article about Edwards converting to WR as a Panther, and he mentioned ASU on 4 occasions. He laughed and said, "I am sure that was not intentional." I added, "The must have edited out the other two references." He laughed again. They liked Gantt. I met Gantt twice. He emailed me some info about OTA practice times and we talked there. Nice guy and good at his job.

Big, strong, good arm. Some throws great, some poor. Overall very well. Grade: B. RT @Gabeking: @carolinagrowl how is cam looking overall?

I'm told by a reliable source that CB Brandon Hogan's rookie season might be a wash. His torn ACL not near where it needs to be yet.

This should NOT come as a surprise to anybody... If you watched the draft, they even said we'd be lucky to have him by week 10... They praised U's for picking a first round talent, then blasted U's for picking somebody that probably wouldn't even be a factor this year...

I'm not surprised... Neither should anyone here be. I actually LOL when sinebody posted that thread saying ^He Failed his physical.. I was like NO sh!t!

No. Not happening. Too costly. RT @manu4t: @carolinagrowl an Asante Samuels deal is getting more possible now?

Some guys are bigger than they sound when you look at numbers on the roster. Lee Ziemba and Sione Fua are two of those guys.

I'm liking what I hear about Armanti, but I don't see him getting a lot of action being the 4th WR. Besides when we go 4 wide.

How do you know he will be the 4th WR? These guys have a clean slate with this new coaching staff, so the opportunity to move up is there.

BTW, I'm trying to remember the last time a WR not named Steve Smith stood out this much.

You're right, I was just assuming he would be.

    • I would say that he's pulling things out of his ass to get people to visit his site.
    • Yep. I was hoping for and calling for a day three guy. But I didn’t research the position to say if we should or should‘t have jumped at a particular guy at a particular spot.    And everything I read said it was a poor draft for RBs depth wise. I guess when Seattle takes a backup RB in the 1st, that kind of backs that up.    I definitely think we should keep 4 running backs and if King can play well enough then keep him too.    I believe I heard Canales say we are a running team (talking about drafting a WR he will be needing to block as well as catch). Well if we are gonna be a running team by identity we don’t need to stock the WR room to overflowing. If one room has to sacrifice, it should not be the RB room given our circumstances.
    • If there's a pattern I'm definitely picking up from Dan and company is a philosophy of making trades where we try not to sacrifice the number of draft picks we have by day's end. In other words, we're not giving up three picks for one, or giving up a future pick to make a pick today. And even if we give up something at the start, we make trades later to make up for that initial loss. Here's how it stacked up for 2026: How we started: 19, 51, 83, 119, 158, 159, 200 How we ended: 19, 49, 83, 129, 144, 151, 227 (no future picks sacrificed) Ultimately, we moved up two spots in the second to ensure we got someone we coveted, gave up a few spots for our fourth round pick, but then had better picks in the 5th (and got really good value out of them), and had a worse 7th rounder which isn't that big of a loss anyways.  At this point, we can question who they draft, but they're pretty good maneuvering across the draft board.
