I avoided every post in this thread assuming the majority were little girls being over-dramatic as usual..

a lot of players have been hurting their feet.. seems a common trend after the lockout. I'm going to assume it's nothing major until I hear otherwise..

<---- must be a prophet

I think he got 8 mil guaranteed. It was absolutely retarded to tear up TD's prior contract to give him a new one. Hurney's loyalty to his players probably cost the team 30 mil this offseason.

when have you ever put together a rational thought?

for someone who thinks they know so much, you dont know very much.

so I'm not the only one sitting back thinking the same thing...

here are some critical points from his deal..from Pat in the NFC South Blog:

"The Panthers didn’t want Davis to feel like a victim of that rule, so they made it a point to extend his contract. It now runs through 2015, but there is protection built into this deal in case Davis can’t come back as something close to the player he was before the injuries."

"The real key will be how Davis performs this season. If he fares well, he’ll be well paid going forward. If he struggles, Davis probably won’t be with the Panthers next season. That’s because his deal includes an $8 million option bonus for 2012. If the Panthers pay that bonus, they’ll also be paying bigger salaries to Davis down the road."

"Bottom line here is the Panthers have secured their rights to Davis for the short term. If he’s able to fully recover, he’ll be taken care of for the long term."

if that don't make sense, you don't understand english..

Too bad he didn't quote the entire article.

The Panthers renegotiated Davis’ base salary this year down to $1 million, but they gave him a $7 million signing bonus right up front. That brings Davis’ cap figure down to $2.4 million for this year, after it originally was scheduled to be $3.8 million.

Sorry I said an 8 mil bonus, when it fact it was only a 7 mil bonus. Still retarded for a player coming off of 2 serious season ending injuries.

Someone mentioned Bob Sanders as a comparable player. I would say that Sanders is probably a slightly better player, yet more injury prone. Sanders commanded an insignificant amount of interest in the FA market, and certainly didn't get 7 mil in guaranteed money.

Can't say giving a proven stud coming off an injury a cheap 5 year contract is a bad move, nor can you say it's a great one. He might not ever return to form, in which case you just cut him and deal with the cap hit. If he returns and plays at a pro-bowl level then you've got him locked with a very favorable deal.

On the other hand if you let him play out this year on his old contract, then he's a free agent at the end of the year. If he does indeed come back and play well then you're in the situation of possibly losing him to FA or paying him a LOT more.

So it's a calculated risk pure and simple. If he returns to form the deal looks great, if he end up on IR again it looks terrible.

Bob Sanders is a great talent over the past 2 seasons he played in more games......

I mean if Bob Sanders got a nice deal.....and stayed healthy....it would be worth it as well as he is a beast. No one is throwing 7 mill bonus and long term deal at him.....he got a modest 1 yr contract.

It is a gamble what Carolina did.....it also shows a long trend...they will overpay their own. I don't see how people get upset when people say Davis got too sweet of a deal all things considered.....very few teams would have done that. Most would have made Davis play his contract out and crossed the money bridge if Davis proved he could make the comeback.

but that is the difference between some owners and Jerry.....Jerry aint' a dick to his people. Doesn't always put business first.

right, because comparing Bob Sanders who played 19 out of 80 games in 5 of his 7 year tenure is completely identical to Thomas Davis who missed 2 games in 4 years up until 2 freak ACL injuries.. Davis is definitely a question mark, but try to keep everything in perspective...

If Thomas Davis gets hurt this year, we don't extend him. if he stays healthy, he's one of the biggest playmakers in the game. 8mil is definitely worth betting on a player of his caliber..

okay, prior to his ACL tears he was pretty healthy....

ACL injuries (2 to the same knee) still caused him to only play in 7 of the last 32. Thomas Davis isn't a safer bet at this stage than someone like Sanders.....not with blowing his knee out twice so quickly.

point being made is there was no need to gamble as we had Davis regardless this year......could of let things play out before tossing the cash. Which from a business side of things makes sense.
