LaFell - C'Mon Man....

OK, I just watched those two endzone throws to LaFell again, and I just don't see how those could be called drops. On the first one, he never even touched the ball and they were both good plays by the DB's, IMO.

 people are trying to bump up Newton's numbers by saying those were drops....they are going to have issues with you sir. The facts always support Newton playing well, no matter what they happen to be.

I didnt see the play like that at all. I thought Newton's throw was a little behind, but playable. . LaFell didnt position and shield well against the DB and tried to catch it in his chest rather than shielding with the body and extending with the hands. That's what I think I remember anyways.

besides 89....

1. Naane

2. LeFell

3. AE

4. Flyin' Hawaiian

5. Martin

yep. We will keep six. Special teams purposes. Some say, "SD and Cleveland only carried 4 or 5 WRs" Thier special teams sucked too. Rivera knows that Martin (and Barnidge, for that matter) are huge special teamers who can participate on offense. They both make the roster.

He might be fine he might not. I agree that theres over reaction, but its not like its unwarranted. He didnt show up on the stat sheet last night period. The Coach isnt glowing about is progress and last night we might have seen why. If he wants to succeed then he has to work hard and that didnt show last night like it did with the players that actually were working hard like Newton, Clausen, and AE.

God, so many weird observations in this thread.

1. They didn't stop defending LaFell because they thought he was ineligible. The replay CLEARLY shows that both defenders bit up because they thought Clausen was either going to have to dump down to DeAngelo or throw it out of bounds. LaFell found a soft spot in the coverage, unfortunately stepped out of bounds prior to coming back in and catching the ball, and Jimmy found him. No player in the entire LEAGUE would trust the officials to have caught a player putting a foot out of bounds and stop defending him. It makes zero sense. These guys miss much bigger things every single game. Give Clausen credit for finding a guy down the field and not make too much of it. LaFell wasn't aware of his feet on that play. Hopefully it doesn't become a problem.

2. LaFell had ZERO chance on either of those two passes to him in the endzone. Not because they were bad throws, but because he was BLANKETED by the DB on both plays. Cam made two decisive throws but unfortunately they were into coverage but not so badly that he had a chance to get picked. They were strong throws, but LaFell is NOT to blame for those incompletions. Neither is Cam. Good defense beats strong offense in that case. I did like to see him take a shot at it. He's not afraid of making a mistake in that scenario. But let us be real for a moment, those were uncatchable passes with the way the DB was draped over him on both plays.

    • We’re in a pickle. My best hope is we protect him and can run the ball vs most Ds and the WRs are healthy so he has every chance to not look like what he looked like in too many games last year.
    • I'm really not stressing about upgrading from Bryce. I'm frustrated with our inability (or refusal) to recognize overall bad QB performance and failure to seriously address the issue. QB is the most impactful position on the field, and we're not only settling for what we've been given to this point, but we've rewarded it with a fully guaranteed 5th year extension for a player that's never played 2 NFL franchise QB quality games back to back in 3 seasons. I can't understand how that's ok from a coach's or GM's viewpoint. Successful franchises don't do things like this. It just doesn't make sense.  We do not have a top half of the league QB right now. Since we don't have that player, we should be looking for him. Pickett isn't it. Grier isn't it. Bryce hasn't proven he is yet. Until you have that sure fire franchise QB, you keep looking. You're not consistently making the playoffs, a deep run, or a SB appearance without one.  What's the worst that could happen? We end up with 2 potential number 1 QBs? How horrible.
    • Easy to understand Pickett, if this is anywhere close to on point. Canales wants to get as close to Bryce as he can- get the pace and timing in the throws as close a he can to Bryce. So the other players don’t have to adjust so much, to a new guy.       If Cam was the 1, he would look for a rocket arm.  But Bryce is the 1. Look for limited in the same way.  Low velocity, plenty of air under it, feels just like home when Picket comes in. And you have the guys on the second team not having such a radical adjustment (if they have to play) like with Dalton to Bryce.    Enter Grier. I guess we will collect those types.
