NFLN made interesting point on Cam

Even if we went to 5 wide, put Olsen and put DWill or Goody in motion to the outside for an under route or some crossing patterns would be plenty of a safety net for Cam. IMHO

Was watching last night and they made an interesting comment in regards to Cam Newton. In addition to the belief he should be the week 1 starter they gave this reasoning....

The NFL today is about spreading teams out....and if Carolina is willing to use 4 WR sets (could include Olsen) then it would be near impossible for a defense to defend Carolina without huge mismatches on the field. Most teams would look to defend those looks by going to nickel and dime w/ added DBs on the field........but if you do that then there is no way they can handle Cam taking off simply b/c they aren't going to win the battle.

Thoughts?

The only reason Mike Vick is flourishing right now is because he taught himself how to throw a football in prison. Cam needs to be feared as a passer under pressure and that is something that has to be earned in the regular season.

only reasoning Vick is good now is b/c Reid > Mora Jr.....by a large margin. Totally different schemes, weapons.....and he is being used different. Vick himself isn't drastically different.

From what I saw last game, it looks like he's a pass first QB. He didn't panic and try to run the ball. Which was very impressive. He kept his eyes down field and threw some beauties. Just need to step up in the redzone and work on footwork. But that shouldn't be a problem. Cam will be a very effective dual threat QB for us for many many years.

I imagine that was by design. I think the coaches told him to look to pass more. But even if true, one preseason game is not enough to gauge his passing effectiveness.

I think the biggest difference with Vick by his own admition is actually trying to run the offense and study now rather than relying on his physical skills, Cam seems much more mature than he was. I'm excited a out the kids potential, but he does need work.

Exactly. I think they are pushing him hard in camp to do things outside his comfort zone. Whenever he does start, I expect them to tailor plays to take advantage of what he is most comfortable with, i.e. lots of shotgun, etc.

The idea that they are having him work outside his comfort zone seems especially true in the red zone. He can be very dangerous on roll outs and read and run but we really haven't seen much of that.

Bingo... And that is what practice are for. But that also is the case with Clausen. They are forcing him into going down the field etc etc.

We as fans have no clue on what is going on in practice we just look and see if they make the throw. In training there are more to a play than a completion. One thing we cant see is if he made the right read, if he is doing that I am happy. His crappy footwork ect can be coached and you can work yourself around such areas with putting him in shotgun and so on but he need to make the right calls. That is the single most important thing with both him and Clausen and we as fans have no idea how they are doing.

So if you dont know the premise for the practice its hard to judge anything.

I don't see that his comment has anything to do with skin color. A lot of people believe that Philly's system makes a quarterback look better, whether its Mcnabb, Vick, or Kolb. It will be interesting to see how Kolb and Mcnabb do this year.

There are two valid comparisons I see to Newton--Vick and Roethlisberger. Vick because he's fast, and Ben because he can keep a play alive with his feet and shake off the first hit. Neither has anything to do with skin color.

While I love the idea in the OP, I would be more than happy if they spend Newton's entire rookie year getting the fundamentals down to the point where they're reflex, and THEN turning the running game loose. He needs to be respected as a big, aware pocket passer before anyone will ever fear him as a real running threat.

what about as a downfield gunslinger? would that not work while he worked on his game?

I mean he might have a little Favre in him that is overlooked. While not ideal long term....it would open up the ground attack.

The comment was that his throwing motion and ability right now was similar to Vick's when he entered the league.
