What does Cam have to do

tee, I think with the Obama thing you are missing the crux of his argument.

1) Quarterbacks who run in college a lot learn to rely on the run, and do not develop passing skills as well as they would if they didn't run so much

2) This means that "running quarterbacks" have a certain set of skills they have developed that is different from other quarterbacks.

3) No quarterback that has won a Superbowl has come close to that kind of ground production regularly in college (Though as you note, 1 has come close which weakens this premise).

If Cam Newton fits the bill of a running quarterback, and if running quarterbacks are defined by their college performances as having a certain skill set, then it is logical to conclude the likelihood of Cam winning a Superbowl is low because others haven't had success in his mold before.

I think you guys are missing my point which goes to my hypothetical question.

It is simple. Something like pass/run ratio has nothing to do with skill set. Skill set is what you see in workouts, how a guy throws the ball, and what you see on tape. It has nothing to do with what ratio he ran the ball in college

The Obama thing was meant to display that he is suggesting that in 2008 you would say essentially "Since there is no historical precedence that a black person has ever been elected president then it is logical to assume that Barack Obama could never win the presidency" And doing so before hearing his ideas, policies, or vision for the future.

The point KJ missed is that a QB is evaluated on what skills he brings to the table not some pass/run ratio. That is why he wouldn't pass on the "unicorn" His skill set was one he liked. Therefore the pass/run ratio no longer mattered.

I am not saying that Cam Newton is the "unicorn" I am saying that to try to project future success by looking at a stat that has no bearing on a QB's skill set is foolish.

You evaluate each QB on his own merits and skill set, not historical precedent. Plus I am not sure that there is a historical precedent for a guy like Cam Newton. There hasn't been anyone similar to him (if you look at things other than pure statistics) ever drafted.

That is not to suggest that he is a better prospect than anyone in history, just unique to any QB I have ever seen in NFL history.

Well I've been told a typical rookie year is the playoffs or very close to it, citing Ryan, Flacco, Sanchez, and Bradford.

You expect the playoffs or a statistical year similar to Bradford?

If not, it would be subpar right?

No. I think if we got close to the playoffs or had a statistically similar year to Bradford that would be an above average year for a rookie IMO.

But everyone cited those guys as the new standard.

Cam can't live up to Joe Flacco or Mark Sanchez?

Seems you guys are changing your stories now that you've seen him play two games against the big boys.

I miss teh search function :(

I don't think our team is anywhere near as good as the Jets or Ravens were at that point unfortunately. I could be wrong, I hope I'm wrong, but I feel like the QB on this team is going to need to be more than just "not awful" for us to do well.

We have more weapons than both of those guys did at their disposal and our defense is led by the best defensive coach there has been in a long time. We have stars all over the field and San Diego had the #1 D without anyone good on it, all because Rivera.

I'm just expecting what everyone has been slurping the last 7 months.

    • They can get film of all the games? Every team? Wow! Who knew… Our games with them are big examples of why they are in  the CB market so hard.   It is the study they do getting ready for the games.  Preparing to play against is a little different than just analyzing film in scout mode. Deeper dive. Then you are analyzing post game too.  This goes to why players often change teams but stay in the division. The opponents know each other on a higher level.  Plus if you lost to us, you used to get fired. Now you have to trade your first round pick. Moving up on the world.
    • I honestly can’t believe this team’s turnaround this season. It’s surreal. Figured healthy we’d be fringe playoffs and with another lottery pick could finally turn the corner, but we don’t even need that. This group is ready. We haven’t played remotely well the last 5 games and yet still blew out 5 bad teams by 16+ each game like it was casual practice. We had a few solid teams with Kemba and Big Al but this is easily our best group since the original Hornets moved to NO. Man, what a shift in culture this new ownership group and front office has brought. So damn happy to see it after years of suffering and consistently meaningless games in this stretch of previous seasons.   Only 2.5 games out of the 6 seed, although Miami, Atlanta and Orlando have been playing well too. Gonna be a fun final stretch, hopefully we can get a top 8 seed at the very least. Celtics tomorrow will be a good test. Would be huge to keep the road winning streak up against a very hot top team on the 2nd half of a back to back. We’ve played Boston pretty well the last few years with much of this same group despite sucking so I do feel pretty good about it. Kon is due for a huge game coming off a few cold shooting games (although despite the poor shooting he’s been contributing well with defense, assists and rebounds).
    • It amazes me how underrated Horn has become after he finally was able to stay on the field. Sure last year wasn’t perfect but he was still a huge reason for our rebound defensively and I’d say he’s easily a top 10 corner. You don’t want to see Mike Jackson as our top corner. Any player is available for the right price but I’d be extremely hesitant to move Horn even for a big haul from LA.
