Rush-to-Judgment after Week One

Rushing game.

I'm thinking I may have been wrong this offseason about needing DeAngelo Williams, and preferring him over Stewart. Maybe that will change after this week's game with Green Bay if they run it more and he's successful, but I'm not liking DeAngelo's body language at all over the last 5 weeks.

Looks like Stewart is a better fit for this new offense than DeAngelo, because DeAngelo doesn't like blocking (he's smaller and not as strong as Stewart) and I don't think he likes having to catch passes across the middle. DeAngelo all of a sudden looks tiny and frail out on the field.

I expect the Panthers to focus on establishing the run against Green Bay to keep Rodgers off the field. Williams needs to start showing some life.

All I know is if our run game can only put up 56 yards on the ground, is there really any reason to keep both, Stewart and Williams?

Even if we get 100....what's the point of having both when we could get some excellent trade value for them right now? I could be wrong, but I just don't really see us getting back to the point where there's going to be enough run plays to keep both of these guys busy the entire season.

Especially with a rushing QB now on our team.

I say we figure out whose going to be better for us, and trade the other one before the deadline.

williams is not very effective against disciplined defenses, he needs to be able to use misdirection to get out of the backfield. once he gets out there tho hes incredibly elusive.

stewart is the better back vs disciplined defenses as he can grind them down and get tough yards every play. i think stew has less big play ability down the field.

neither are very impressive blocking or catching the football, thats what goodson is there for.

also u gotta remember otah is really out of cardio shape (still looks strong as an ox though). by week 3 i think our run game will improve drastically, i dont think we will be asking newton to throw that much game in game out. its nice knowing that hes willing to step up to that challenge though.

Well apparently Otah suffered a concussion. All the more reason to look to trade one of these two for an O man. Are there any teams out there with a deep and talented bench at O line that might need a RB?

our new scheme believes in the forward pass (which means you don't need an uber backfield)

Stewart is younger, better blocker, and has always been better against the really tough defenses.

Goodson is the best pass catching threat on the team.

Stewart is hitting an age compared to Williams where he is simply going to be the better RB.

Hurney paid Williams for his 2008 and 2000 seasons. The signing of Williams was a huge headscratcher for those outside looking (those outside Carolina). Bad move.

It will probably be half way through the season before they give Stewart the reps he probably deserves.

28 yr old RBs coming off back to back seasons of being hurt.....don't deserve top tier RB money. Very few RBs (like 3-4) deserve that type cash......and Williams is past that point.

Williams' last 100 yard game was when Nov of 2009? That is a pretty lengthy time in the NFL. I personally would like him to prove me wrong but with our new offense and other weapons....I just don't see Williams being what he was just paid to be.

Williams got paid as if he was going to be a HUGE bulk of this offense. He simply won't be.....bad move to pay guys for what they have done for us. Money should of made us better now and we could have used that cash to aggressively gone after talent at another position.

Who wants DeAngelo's contract to take on? Who wants to give up a stud OL for a RB (who simply are a dime a dozen in today's NFL). Teams looking for guys w/ specific skill sets to work with groups of RBs.....easier to replace them and they don't cost as much (nor put your team in a hole if you lose them).

I don't know, that's what I'm asking but I'm not saying a straight up trade. And why does it have to be Williams? We keep Williams for now, since it seems we have no choice anyway, let Stewart go and then replace Williams for a young guy in a couple of years.

Either one you keep will be fine, imo. Especially since our bigger issue to our run game comes from the O-line.

why would you keep a 28 yr old RB and trade away your younger stud? Stewart is 24.....this is the time when RBs take off. DeAngleo is in the stage when the wheels start slowly falling off.

quick, name the last game where Williams impressed you? Age and RBs is something that comes and quick.....and DeAngleo is at the age where it will be coming quick. It may have already taken him down a few pegs.

Williams doesn't have a couple years in him before we have to worry about his replacement. That is why his contract made no sense......can't think b/c he is a Panther he will be an exception to when most top tier RBs lose it and become role players.

neither back will be traded...

1. no team in the league is good to pick up williams's ridiculous contract.

2. if williams is indeed ineffective (too early to tell imo), carolina can't afford to deal stewart.

Williams won't play out his contract here.....he will eventually be cut.

    • I had started typing my post hours ago and didn’t finish it and just came back to finish it, posted it, then saw yours and saw we were pretty much saying the same thing - even the games that stick out to us most.  I don’t think a lot of people remember that SF playoff game, but I felt like I had just got mugged in broad daylight.  I remember them calling Mitchell for unnecessary roughness, and then I remember watching Boldin take a super late cheap shot, dead in front of the ref and then showing him watching the whole thing in replay…  the refs let them have a fuging field day and didn’t do jack poo, but if we so much as breathed the wrong way it was fuging 15 yards.  Each team playing under two completely different sets of rules.  poo hurt.  I was enraged.  I’ve never went back to watch either that game or SB50 and never will.  fuging robbery.
    • I’ve said it a million times since, but it’s impossible to keep them from affecting the game.  In SB50, they literally took the game from us, and they did it early.  Cotchery’s no-catch?  The miraculous amount of times we converted for a first down only to have it suddenly called back make it a 3rd down and 15+ against the best defense in the league that specialized in rushing the passer and man coverage on the back end?  And you do that enough times, you kill the morale and confidence of the team you’re doing it against.  It’s telling the one team “you can do whatever with impunity” and the other “you can’t do whatever they’re allowed to do.”  It changes the aggression level.  It essentially neuters one team and allows the other to do whatever the fug they want.  Imagine you call the police for help and they get there and tell you to sit still while the other party beats the poo out of you and you can’t defend yourself.  That’s what the officials do.  There is no way to avoid them affecting the game.  And more often than not, it’s the most subjective calls they use to do so.  Even in SB50…  you saw the Broncos commit more egregious penalties than anything we did, and barely any of it was called.  Their OL was holding all fuging game and the refs did nothing.  We already had our work cut out for us against two future HOF edge rushers and the refs played to their advantage with that.  From what I remember, both Oher and Remmers were called for holding at various times and their hands were in the INSIDE of the defender.  It was garbage, but all by design. Also, if there is any video of it anywhere, go look at what the refs did against us back in 2013 against SF.  The fix was in there too.  They stepped in early and often and ensured we knew we were not allowed to play with the same aggression or intensity SF was.  It was disgusting as well. at this point, I hope Vince McMahon, errr, I mean Goodell just finally scripts us to win it, because this poo is not won via competition or off merit.
    • You can go back to the New York Knicks somehow getting Patrick Ewing.  I saw a story where they place the New York Knick card in the freezer right before the drawing.  It was simple.  Show everyone the cards are undetectable to the human eye.  All they had to do was grab the coldest card. IMO ever since Goodell took over the NFL it has been fishy.  Patriots winning the SB after 9/11, New Orleans after Katrina and Peyton Manning's going away gift against us. The terrible calls during that game were blatantly one sided.  New England should have been stripped of their first 3 SB when they were caught spying on the other team in their SB wins.  I think the evidence against the Patriots was so damning Goodell felt it could ruin football and they brushed it under the table.   In the 2004 SB, How did we go from practically no yards in the first Quarter to setting a record in the 3rd Qtr.  Dan Henning changes the game plan.  IMO probably the greatest half time adjustment of all time.
