Newton's big numbers fail to add up again

"Take what the defense gives you" = taking the bait.

The defense is giving it to you, because they believe they can get three picks out of it in return.

I'd like to see the Panthers do what they need to do to win, not just take what they get when that's really just a "bend but don't break" defensive game plan.

In the NFL, you have to be able to make a D pay when the sell out to stop one aspect of the game.

Newton has been remarkable in making defenses pay.....but being he has only legimately played 2 weeks of NFL football you can tell he still has some growing pains. He almost made the Superbowl champs pay the ultimate price w/ a team that went 2-14 last year.

The redzone shrinks for a rookie QB.....Cam has no problem getting down there. As the year goes on his redzone play will get better......and then teams will have to adjust....b/c Newton/Carolina will be putting up big points if they oversell to take away lanes.

The offense was very effective. How many times did we punt today? How many times were we in the red zone and fail to score TDs. We moved the ball. We were extremely effective. Once we stop getting terrible penalties in the red zone, start getting tds instead of FG in the red zone, and stop turning the ball over we are going to score a ton of points or at least would have today.

In short, I agree we need more balance, but that lack of balance had nothing to do with our effectiveness today. Penalties, turnovers, and not scoring TDs in the red zone is what kept us from putting up big points.

Impressive doesn't always mean effective, or successful.

You can come across a very "impressive" female, but that doesn't mean one evening with her won't leave you with more than you asked for. :puke:

At some point, someone has to stress that Williams and Stewart have been very good backs in the NFL, so why has Cam Newton thrown 83 passes in 2 games?

It makes no sense for the Panthers not to be more balanced, and they won't be a real threat until they have it. Yet, the media thinks it's all about Cam Newton. Manning didn't win a Super Bowl until he got a serviceable running game, and the Saints picked up Ingram because they credit their ability to run for their Super Bowl 2 years ago.

Do any of these Newton analysts know any of this?

The Saints were 28th in the league in rushing the year they won the Superbowl. Just saying. I think the Panthers should use the pass to set up the run more. Not run on first down since that seems to result in 2nd and 9 most of the time but there are long stretches without a run which I don't think is going to work for a whole season (Cam will be killed).

Can't put the whole game on Cam for the first few years but then everything around him will be a complement to what he does like other field generals.

Balance is great if the defense is not as skewed as it has been stopping the run, loading the box and blitzing Newton. You take what defenses give you and the past 2 weeks they loaded the box and gave us the pass. We took it, like we should.

Complain that we should have run the ball at least once on third and 1 and I would be with you totally. Argue that we should have tried a reverse or two and I would be right with you. But complain that we shouldn't be doing exactly what we have done the past 2 weeks, and I can't get behind that at all.

The Green Bay defense decided to stop the run and force a rookie QB to beat them. With Newton's success the past two games, this tactic is a very risky one for opposing teams.

You will start seeing team's game plan for Newton's passing ability....which will start to open the running game up.
