Overblown: End of Game Time Management

I think we can all agree that Rivera's timeout at the end of the first half was inexcusable. Dumb thing to do even if we did have 12 men on the field, let the refs call the penalty.

But I do think what is overblown and something Rivera is getting too much blame for is the end of the game time management. With the way our defense was playing there really wasn't much use in calling timeouts. People claim that if we would have called timeouts we would have had more time to work with. Whose to say that the Saint's wouldn't have slowed their pace down and killed the clock near the endzone. Then we would have really been screwed because there could have been even less time (and obviously less timeouts). Calling timeouts really only works when you are able to stop them, and Brees was on a mission.

Just my thoughts, maybe I am in the minority.

Can someone explain why he called the first half time out? He said he was afraid he was going to get caught with 12 men on the field, but even if that would have happened, how would that have changed anything? Wouldn't the Saints still only have time for one play anyway?

He wasn't thinking. It would have been a closer field goal with the flag but in that situation you just have to let it play out especially considering it would have been rushed.

50 seconds and 3 time outs would have been plenty of time. What killed the drive was the bogus holding call when we were at midfield. We would have just needed about 12 yds to be in fg range but getting 25 yds is alot tougher

I was in the stands screaming for a time out right before the Saints last play on the TD drive. That 50 seconds could have 1:20. That would have allowed more flexibility in play calling allowing a pass to the middle of the field or possibly a screen. It was plenty of time for a field goal but should have been more. Maybe enough to get into the end zone.

But what would have happened if they picked up a first after using our 3 timeouts and killed more time? Then, we wouldn't have any timeouts and less time to work with.

    • Hey if they could beat Seattle… tiebreaker head to head over GB, LARms, Seattle… win out the record is 11-6.  Now rap my knuckles for suggesting we win out, but that would be some funny poo. Talk about sneaking up on people.
    • I expected 6 wins this season. I need to see the Panthers blow by that now that they exceeded it by 1. I like how Canales has schemed around the weaknesses on offense in the passing game. I am impressed with the receivers, run blocking, running back combo and secondary communication in zone. Defense and QB need more consistency. The improvement of the defensive play calling and critical 3rd down and 4Q passing when trailing is going to be what I am looking for going into the playoffs. If the Panthers can consistently regain the lead after trailing over the next 4 games, I can see them competing in the playoffs and worth a reevaluation of the last 2 seasons' weaknesses. This is the prove it or lose it moment in their Panthers careers for Young and Evero. No excuses.
    • He's on the smaller size for a center (5'8" 175lbs) and he is a bit of a liability in the faceoff circle. But, he's a proven 60 pt player with room to grow. I'd still rather go get TT from Buffalo. Rossi would be a great consolation prize, though.
