Smitty and Roman Harper Article

The thread on this in the Saints Forum is pretty interesting.

Seems half of them think Smitty is a punk and the other half think hes a hardcore player

I have nothing but respect for Steve Smith. He is as tough as they come, and just a flat out baller on the football field. I like that he isnt crying about the late hit either. Sure he talks a lot, but he has earned the right to talk based on what he does on the field. Lets just give respect where its due. Smith is a real football player, and the Saints are a better team than the Panthers.

I don't know how anyone could read that and not see that Smith was trying to weasel out of the fact that he showboated on his way to the endzone by slowing down to a walk and daring Harper to catch him.

He's trying to make it sound like Harper just hit him b/c he scored. He's a passive-aggressive little punk, always has been.

Seriously, where was the showboating? I have seen players slow down like that at least a hundred times without some defensive player taking a cheap shot at them. What made this time so different?

If Harper wanted to make a point, he should have stopped Smitty from scoring. Otherwise, just nut up and take it like a man.

I was a little surprised @ Smitty's response... not the part about not wanting an apology but the whole "turn the other cheek" theme to it.

Like I said, now that we know the Saints feelings about celebrating in the end-zone, I say we return the favor the next time we see them.

Using this as a baseline, are we to assume that Mark Ingram deserved a nut shot for his dance number?

That's what I was thinking, I guess according to the Saints rules Ingram deserved death.

It was a classic text-book example of taunting, he got right in Gamble's face and did his stupid little dance... why a flag wasn't thrown is beyond me.

I'm pretty sure a flag was thrown. There was a lot of commotion though and I don't think the cameras showed the ref calling the penalty.

Harper is a ghetto thug who would be in prison or dead if he wasn't in the NFL. I would love him to get cancer.

I wouldn't go that far. After watching several family members taken from me, I wouldn't wish cancer on anyone. Just saying.

    • I liked him when he was at Michigan because I'm a Wolverine homer. After that...
    • Hello, soccer fans [crickets, tumbleweed flies by]. The World Cup kicks off in less than 2 weeks and, well, 🇺🇸USA USA USA🇺🇸 and all. We beat Senegal 3-2 yesterday in a tune-up friendly at BoA, with Christian Pulisic finally entering the scoring column.  How will we do in the World Cup once our tournament kicks off on the 12th? Well, there are 48 teams (assuming Iran is there) and it feels like one of two thing happens: we get grouped for the first time since '98, or we make it to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups. I tried out the lottery for an Atlanta game and struck out, so yesterday was as World Cup as I'll get for in-person ($285/ticket for like Norway vs $39/ticket for USMNT right beforehand was a layup).  The U.S. has a travel-heavy schedule in group play, playing in LA, Seattle and LA. Real road warrior mentality being built. Glad the east coast gets worse kickoff times for a NA World Cup than a Qatar World Cup.
    • Well, that's the thing. Drafting players only for their physical measurables as you are suggesting only really happened during 2024, and X unfortunately has become the poster child for that. To be clear, it's not necessarily about drafting RAS over skill, but RAS over NFL-readiness and/or a solid body of work. Lots of players show skill in college, but those skills don't necessarily translate to the NFL for a multitude of reasons. But, getting back to the main point, to be clear, I believe that our FO is still enamored with physical gifts (who wouldn't be?), but now they're letting Dr. Eric Eager's proprietary system--his "secret sauce" prioritize the players that the Panthers draft, and it seems like it weighs not only a solid body of work, relative to a college career of course, but consistent gradual improvement as evidenced by production pretty highly.
