NFC Playbook and Panthers Defense

Playbook really showed:

1. how badly some of the Panthers' defense schemes are and how

badly executed

2. how vunerable these schemes are to the run

3. how the Panthers fail to set the edge because our linebackers lack the

lateral speed to make the scheme work

4. and until the Panthers provde they can stop the stretch play it will be run over and over again

I'm no coach; but, clearly what is being done on defense is not working, why do we keep going with that unbalanced line set; particularly since our linebackers lack the speed to run it. I don't get it.

Personally, I don't know what to think about McDermott or even Rivera on defense, we can say 'young team' or 'injuries to Beason and Davis and Edwards'; but, all teams have injuries, some a lot worse than ours.

The same is true on special teams. I'm no AE fan but always seems like there are 2-5 opposing team special teams players around him everytime he catches the ball.

I'm not trying to be a smartass or anything, but I can't think of a team with more injuries on the defensive side. Houston maybe? But they suck too.

What we suffer from is a severe lack of depth on the defensive side of the ball combined with extending or picking up injury prone/injured players. When your last few drafts have focused on QB and receivers in the high rounds you wind up with what we have. A Matt Millan level of depth. This is the same reason our special teams suck.

Injuries are not an excuse. They spend enough money each year to field a complete team. Problem is our GM acted like a teenage girl at the mall with daddy's credit card this off season and really didn't upgrade any position except QB and tight end.

The interesting part will be how we address this next year. One philosophy of thought is to build the nickle defense first if you know you have a good offense. The reason is you will play with a lead more often than not. That also fits in with the way the league is passing these days.

I wouldn't mind a shut down corner through FA or the draft if we have enough money to get that done. We need to make Gamble the #2 corner. Next is probably D line.

It's because 2 out of 5 of our good defensive players are on IR, but our defense still would be pretty bad with them in, since our safeties are horrible and our DT's are really bad so we'd still be vulnerable to the deep pass and the run.

Its tough to stop the ZBS without penetration from the DL.

Short of that you have to blitz w/ the LBs but that leaves you open to play/boot action passing.

I think Rivera may have made a mistake in letting both Landri and Johnson go, but that's something he'll learn from. I think McDermott is doing the same thing to Ron Meeks' group as he did to Jim Johnson's. And I think that we really miss Brian Baker.

The Panthers are going to be very, very good in the next couple of years, and hopefully this next draft will bring a star on the defense that will complement Newton on the offensive side of the ball. If that happens, we ought to be great. In the meantime, you just have to be patient.

I think the thing that bothers me, and yes I agree with the pros on Playbook, they are spot on; but, not wrapping up, taking bad angles, and constantly being out of position has nothing to do with injuries.

To me, if a player is good enough to be on a NFL team then he should understand the basics. It's not like they are 8 years old and putting pads on for the first time.

They knew Beason was hurt before the season, knew Davis probably wouldn't make it pass Week 3, and drafted Hogan with a busted knee.

I want to see our defense have a succesful game of stopping run plays. Until I see that I don't have much faith in our defense's ability to keep opponents out of the endzone.

Good teams battle through injuries because they have depth. That is why there are 46 players on our team.

It's very sad when the panther's defense is just as vulnerable to give up the first down on 3rd and 10 as they are 3rd and inches.
