from under center:

9 passes: 3 good(48). 2 for 2 yards to smith. 2 sacks(-17). 1 fumble. 1 incomplete.

7 runs/13 yards = 1.2ypa

1 scramble(10)

17 plays/58 yards =3.4yards. Jacksonville(32nd) gets 4.0 yards per play.

It's hard to establish the run out of shotgun/pistol spread when Smith's wrapped up. You need a very accurate passer that can complete short passes all day long: Brees, Brady, Aaron. Even then it's still hard. In our case you need run formations, and taking snaps form under center. Problem is to set up the run out of running formations, you need to pass more out of running formations. This requires play action, turning around, 3-step and 7-step drop back passes, great timing. When Cam passes out of I formations, bad things happen. So for us they work only when we use them sparingly and catch opponents by surprise so our guys are wide open.

And if you're always passing out of the shotgun/pistol spread, it doesn't take a genius to figure out what you're going to do when you get under center which is why Chud still passes sometimes. I think even a monkey would figure it out after about 10 times. Cam has not earned enough credibility with NFL defenses and defensive coordinators that he's a good passer from run formations. They know, most of the time it will be a short dump-off or a run when we go under center. Especially with Smith sitting back waiting for a dump-off.

I understand the idea of surprise. It makes defenses think we're going to run with Smith sitting back, but it also takes away your deep threat every time you do that and Stew would be much better suited for the job. Smith should be running up field anyway if we want short 3-4 yard passes on first down. I would rather do a poor job faking the hand-off, make them think it's a fake hand-off, especially with Smith running, making them drop back, then just dump it off to Stewart or anyone else. If Smith happens to get open and beat his man: hit him deep on first down.

I just wanna know why 9 weeks into the season Cam has trouble with snaps from under center and we're still looking the same we did against Green Bay & Arizona when fast pass rushers blow up this playbook. I looked at this back then too.

you are forced to be one dimensional when you are put in that situation.

that's why it's important for your special teams and defense to not suck, esp. early n the game. you put the offense in a situation that they are forced to try and get the ball down quickly. you don't have the luxury of running the ball because it eats up too much clock.

if you want to control the game, you take control early. if you want to regain control of the game later, then you have to get down the field as quickly as possible and score as often as possible. you can't do that with a heavy dose of running.

not sure why thats so hard to understand. when you get abused early by the other team, you forfeit control of the game.

Down by two TD's with 3 1/2 quarters of football left is no reason to abandon the run. When you have a bad defense, you absolutely have to run to have any chance to win the game. There is a reason you always hear of sticking with the game plan and not going into panic mode when bad things happen early.

it's not a matter of panicing. it's working with the hand thats dealt you.

when your defense and special teams give up that many points that early in the game, you can't live under the delusion that they won't be giving up more. you absolutely have to be aggressive in getting the ball downfield and that means airing it out. they had just as much time to grow their lead as we did to get back in the game. the D and ST showed that they couldn't be trusted to stop them.

it isn't just the being down by 14 points so early either. because of some very successful blitzing on first down, they were stuck in some 2nd and long situations. you don't run very often then either.

you abandon the run to get back in the game quickly, esp. when you have a defense and special teams that can't be trusted to stop the other team from scoring more.

this would be true if you had the lead or the game was close. that was never the case. when you are down by that many points priority #1 is to score as quickly as possible regardless of how the defense does.
