i don't think that switching to a 3-4 is necessary. i think we are on the right track, we just need help/experience at DT, our LBs to get healthy, and the defense to have a full offseason. we are really young and the majority of the improvements this past offseason had to do with building up the offense. i think they'll focus predominately on the defense this next year and we should have some solid additions made to it in the offseason.

i don't think it matters what the base D is as long as it's creative and aggressive and the players know what their roles and how to perform them. that's just something that a full offseason will help and having a season under their belts will go a long way in helping them know it.

Defenses are easier to turn around.

3-4 or 4-3, rivvera and hurney just need to go out and get their guys.

I honestly don't care which defensive scheme we run. Both, when executed, are good defenses.

I still don't think the panthers will use a 3-4 as their base defense.

This last offseason the focus was on improving the offense...which was needed.

This coming off season, they'll fix the defense.

If I'm not mistaken, as obviously I don't follow the Texans closely, they were already a 3-4, then tried to switch to a 4-3 last season or the season before... Point being, they were already built for a 3-4 and had plenty of personnel to fit the scheme.

Once Phillips got there, he just switched them back to a base 3-4 and obviously is doing very well with it. But, it didn't happen in one year, they already had the pieces for it in place.

way to discredit wade.

The texans have been running the 4-3 at least as long as mario williams has been in the league.

Being as i'm down here in texans country, i could easily get the information you needed before you decided to talk out of your ass.

Wade phillips is one of the best defesive minds in the nfl.

I'd agree.

The aftermath of this week's game reminded me of how people were after the second game against Atlanta in 2002. that was the year they trounced us 71-0. People were ready to bench everybody, hang Fox, shoot Hurney...basically the usual overreaction.

The next season we were in the Super Bowl.

in two games they beat us 71-0.

30-0 in first game and 41-0 in the second game. just to clarify.

but yea...we won 3 in a row and that was pretty exciting, but then we lost 8 in a row, the 41-0 beating the falcons gave us at home was the worst, but it was the end of the slide. from there we won 4 of the next 5 games.

sometimes you have to hit a very ugly bottom before you can make the climb back up. hopefully we have hit that ugly bottom.

Cool. Because the first thing I think when I'm on a message board is to ask pantherclaw, a guy I don't know at all personally, about anything to do with Texas sports, especially being that because I don't know you I also don't know where you live or what you know.

I apologize, I was in class and couldn't really look anything up on it at the time.

But, the Texans ran a 4-3 the 5 seasons prior to Phillips getting there. Yet, show me where I'm wrong as to whether they already had the pieces there when Phillips got there.

Antonio Smith, played in a 3-4 before. It was discussed quite a bit when Mario Williams came out as to whether he was a 4-3 DE or a 3-4 LB and which scheme fit him best. Connor Barwin, same deal. They also had quite a few big fat guys at DE that could play 3-4 DE. Their LBs, also were capable of being very successful in a 3-4 - Ryans, Cushing, etc.

So, how is that discrediting Phillips? They already had pieces that worked with what he was wanting to do.

Why don't you take a Xanax before talking out of your ass Captain Texan.

so a team running a 4-3 for 5 years already had pieces in place for a 3-4?

Interesting.

I'll give more credit to the coach, cause without the defensive coaches, those players wouldn't be executing the defense like they are.

I'm not a texan fan, but the least you can do when ya make a point, is to know what supports your point...otherwise you are just talking out of your ass. Don't get butt hurt cause ya got called out on it.

Sadly, we may not have.

Won't change my opinion though. Heck, early on I expected another 2-14 year or close and had no issue with that. Jimmy Johnson's first season with the Cowboys sucked too.

No doubt someone will come on and tell me why it's different, how Rivera isn't Jimmy Johnson, etc.

I'd like to see a switch to a 3-4, one, because it would give the NFC South something new to look at. Something new to gameplan for. It would force the South to get rid of their normal template to beat the other teams in the South, and come up with something new.

Also, it seems like teams that run a 3-4 are better pass rushing teams, because of their designed blitzes. Are there any stats to back this up? Probably, but, I'm too lazy to look them up right now.

It could also lead to Kevin Greene maybe coming back. I actually wouldn't mind seeing Kevin Greene as our defensive assistant coach, or, if it didn't work out with McDermott, seeing him as our defensive coordinator.
