Year 2 of rebuilding going on, where are we better than last year except QB?

The offense and defense have basically switched places. Last season the Defense would do enough to keep us alive, then wear down. Anemic on offense.

This year the offense is much improved, got to control the turnovers, but it seems like even with those we still aren't in a position to win. The balance of the play calling was so baffling to me.

I really like how they aggressively went out and improved the TE position. I saw a lot of people here suggest we stick with Rosario and Barnidge and let them develop, an approach I strongly disagreed with.

The "stick with what you've got, let guys develop" mantra is something this FO is known for but it's nice to see them go out and completely flip the roster when guys aren't producing. It's something I'd like to see a LOT more of but I don't think we'll see a complete shift in philosophy until we get a new GM.

Not to mention we're completely f**ked cap space wise for the next couple of years. I doubt we see any noteable free agent signings for several years. We'll be lucky this offseason just to resign our own marginal free agents. Next year you'll see basically the same team with 6 new drafted players (only two early picks). Yippee.

You can gut a team and start a rebuild in the same year, especially when it's an uncapped season and you don't have to deal with the normal cap hits from cutting players. But honestly, to me, the whole "ohh it's just a rebuilding/throwaway season anyway" is really just an excuse for bad poorly managed teams. You should be doing everything possible to push for a playoff spot and a championship every single season.

I remember Atlanta in 2007 had one of the worst seasons I can remember in recent years. Their coach quit 13 games into the season. Pretty much everything that could go wrong went wrong. They made the playoffs the next year. There are other similar quick turnarounds in recent history. There's really no excuse.

I hear ya, that you can count the gutting of a team etc as rebuilding.....BUT in this case, last year it wasnt. You dont start rebuilding with a lame duck coach. My point is I just throw away last year, as nothing. Not saying though that I didnt want or think the Panthers could compete this season. I was even thinking they could tease use with a playoff run, had they beat MN and went on a small winning streak. At this point it is rebuilding, and its just getting started. Next season I will be back to expecting more again

I do want some damn wins!!!! Watching that second half today was painful.

    • I work with social emotional learning and I don't know why a player with all the tools (to Snow's point) sucks when he was a top 10 player in college.  It is not talent, and it is usually not due to some learning disability-.  It comes down to dispositions or emotions in a lot of cases. The reason I pointed out Simmons in particular is because he was drafted to be a DC's new weapon.  I have friends who played in the NFL and they talk about the amount they throw at you--and those were guys who played 1 position.  Simmons shows his ability on special teams--where you are a bit more turned loose than scripted or forced to read blocking schemes or pass routes, etc.  See ball, get ball.  Simmons has been tried at CB, nickel, S , LB edge and he has had 5 different coordinators if you do not count the STs guy.  This would overwhelm most people.  Nobody knows what it does to your confidence and motivation to go from the best player on your team and a top college player to getting cut.   I just think that players like this can be saved.  To say, "He just isn't good" is not to answer the question, "Why was this not noticed during the interviews?  game film?  Combine?  References?  etc.  No, there has to be something more to it than that.  I think Isaiah needs one job and that job should be aligned with a strength.  If he fails then, fine.  Maybe he lost his mojo.  Maybe he never had it.  But to understand what he has been through is to give the guy the benefit of the doubt.  If you played in high school, you got a happy meal version of what it is like in college.  College was an appetizer when compared to pros.  We shall see.  But I am more optimistic about Simmons than I am XL.  Simmons was asked to things most NFL players cannot do.  XL just needs to catch the damn ball in bounds.   Middle schoolers do it every day.
    • This was a super interesting analysis....and I will say I dont think it prevents us from looking at Safety in the draft. IF Ransom takes a step up and outplays Moehrig, there is an out for them after the year as a potential cap cut.  EVEN if not, if you are right and Simmons shows some promise as a Big nickel and Moehrig gets  injured and Ransom looks good (or even if Moehrig looks bad) I could see him being a cap casualty in 2027 as long as we feel we have enough talent there as starting potential.  Lotta football to play and Lotta injuries to happen.  Im hopeful because his measurables are through the roof, but unless they translate you still gotta go with what you got.
    • He’s a leader on this defense. Sometimes you need a guy because he makes those around him better. Talent wise he is a career backup but he’s part of the fabric of this d that’s already gelled.  If you bring in all these new pieces without some of the established leadership you have a lack of focus. This is a good signing.
