McDermott struggling to get Panthers' defense on track

McDermott has never shown any ability to improve a defense. I personally hope they let him go after this season, b/c I am tired of people claiming it is b/c of injuries. We are NOT the only team to lose starters!

So people are thinking the players aren't trying? Is it not partly the DC's job to help identify players to the HC & GM that can help the D (at least scheme-wise).

How do teams go to the playoffs & win when starters get hurt, but we can't even get to out of 1 of the 2 worst defenses in the entire league? It is not just players who don't care or don't have talent...you can say that every year that a team under-performs then.

Honestly, I'm just tired of us sucking. To score on O as much as we do & still lose games is quite ridiculous... bye bye McDermott :seeya:

explains it all..

yes, it sucks.. but if you can't grasp how having 2 rookie DTs starting and your LBers are decimated and playing all game, well, you are ignoring a HUGE issue..

most teams have injuries, and even they aren't facing that scenario. . and if they are, I guarantee you they are towards last in the league...

Seriously?! Understand? Who picks the players, the Falcons? You play with the guys you have & you find a way to succeed. Does anyone really think Ron freaking Edwards would have changed the whole defense? Did you notice how the D played the game WITH Beason & Davis in there?! (Beason got injured in the 3rd quarter, so it's not like he didn't play for a significant amount of time)

D gave up approximately 300 yards passing, 100 yards rushing & 4 TDs (28 points) that game. Is that the power D we would have if Beason & Davis didn't get hurt? Talk about lack of understanding.

How about you face reality instead of your emotional stammering that it is not McDermott's fault, it's not Rivera's fault, it's not Hurney's fault, it's not Richardson's fault...WHO's freaking fault is it?! Please explain rather than making excuses for those responsible to put a NFL ready D on the field.

don't be mad.. it's kind of a big deal.

Bleys, do you think McDermott is doing a good job?

I've seen some bright spots on D.. we've won a ton of games in the 1st half.. I think depth is killing us in the 2nd.. once that is fixed, I think all the blame can be sat squarely on McDermott's shoulders..

am I saying the D been spectacular? come on now... we are getting killed running the ball for obvious reasons and our LBers suck in coverage..

if he's really doing that bad, he'll get fired in the offseason by guys who truly know what the deal is.. listening to people bitch from the couch who want to totally disregard our thin D (to put it lightly) isn't something I'm going to subscribe to at the moment..

I have seen plays where he's made the wrong calls, thinking pass instead of run.. I can't say I see that all the time though and some of that is going to happen.. as they say, the other team practices too..

is the tackling on McDermott? obviously it's not the best it's ever been, but tackling has been a complaint for quite a few years.. and considering rookies and backups are mostly playing aside from our DE's, Gamble, Godfrey and Munnerlyn.. (who happen to be tackling well..)

In evaluating McDermott, let's look at some facts:

  • Philly ended last year with a defensive ranking of 14 (FO DVOA).

  • This year, Philly added Nnamdi Asomugha, Cullen Jenkins, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, and Jason Babin to the defense. All but Jenkins have been considered star players in the league.

  • Philly currently sits at a ranking of 19

I think many have formed an opinion based on his firing last year. If so, you may want to reconsider your position.

Not the whole defense, but he certainly was a big puzzle piece for the D line. They expected to plug him in as a starting caliber DT, and he is one. Shame he got hurt, but he wasn't known to be injury prone at all. If he played this year I'm sure the D-Line would have benefited....I guess we'll have to wait and see.

PP6 returned a Punt for a TD and there were a couple of ridiculous long pass plays given up. West Coast away game with a shortened off-season for a team coming off a 2-14 year. I didn't like it, but I can see how it happened.

This is poor way to look at things. First off you didn't bring up any players they lost. But even if we assume that they have more talent on D this year this really only shows that McD is better than their new DC (the guy that was their OLine coach last year BTW) not that he's actually any good.

But I'll give you pie/rep just cause you used bullets.

    • This season only ends one way... We win this Sunday. Bryce is decent. We take back 1st place...   Only to then get our brakes blown off in the last two weeks.
    • Here's one of the most maddening things, that will be shown in full light over the next three weeks. The same people around here that called Darnold a bum and Mayfield a washed up over draft are also the ones saying Bryce is a catastrophe. Yeah, and I've been one who said Bryce wasn't big enough, brave enough or capable enough. I said back in the day that Darnold had a lot of fight in him and got shouted down. And on Mayfield, heck I didn't know, I just knew we had a very, very bad team that was run terribly. But I saw both of those guys go out there and resurrect their careers and be play-off bound since shaking the Carolina clay dust off their cleats. And we sat there and cat called their cars as they pulled out of the parking lot, laughing at what nobodies they were. Over the next three weeks, those two guys may just serve us sh!t sandwiches and then settle down to their just desserts. And then we'll probably let Bryce go off into the realm of other teams. And when that happens, will we see him coming back, better than before and we're left to re-sit this cycle all over again? Same naysayers, same results, same revolving carousel of ponies and pundits?  Will we end up looking like the Temu version of the San Diego Chargers back in the day watching Drew Brees come to fruition in the previously moribund Superdome while we whiff on a Manning pick just to be jilted for Phillip "Always a Bridesmaid" Rivers?
