BMW 328i?

Now, I'm so confused ... so many opinions!! I know, I asked for it. Mechanic says don't by German (BMW or VW) ... but I don't want a Honda or a Toyota, which he suggests.

UGH ....

Volkswagens are less reliable overall - that's why we insist on a warranty. But Japanese sedans are designed to be sedate and boring - even the really fast ones are quiet and floaty. German cars are designed to help you feel the road and have fun driving.

You may want to check out the Mazda 6 as an alternative to the Accord/Camry boringness. I used to have a MazdaSpeed 6, which they don't make anymore, which was brilliant. Traded it in on a Miata when I started commuting up Independence instead of out on the highway all day.

Right now I'm enjoying a 2008 335i (twin turbo inline 6).... from someone who has bought and sold many cars prior to med school, the 3 series BMW is a well built machine. I would stay away from the 5 and 7 series because of the ongoing iDrive problems. Probably the finest BMW I have ever enjoyed is a 2006 M5 but that is a totally different animal. If you want to enjoy a BMW in bliss, buy one that someone has already purchased the CPO warranty for it as that is a tremendous inherited value.
