Jordan Gross and DeAngelo Williams

I was reading ESPN and came across this:

Rivera pulled Newton and the other key starters early in the fourth.

As Newton walked over to the bench, teammates DeAngelo Williams and Jordan Gross sat with towels over their head -- some good-natured ribbing directed at Newton, who has been criticized by some fans for covering his head when things weren't going well.

Anyone happen to catch this? Grab a picture? Would love to have saw the reactions.

Nope. More on it, though:

Dec. 24, 2011 6:35 p.m. - by Jeff Hawkins - Towels, towels, everywhere you look

Known for wearing a towel over his head while on the sideline, Cam Newton looked over at his mocking teammates. All he could do was laugh. With Newton out of the rout, T Jordan Gross was among those who donned a towel. “Giving him a hard time,” Gross said of the joke. Panthers RapidReports

Dec. 24, 2011 6:27 p.m. - by Jeff Hawkins - Towel outbreak all about fun, Newton says

On his teammates’ prank of wearing towels on their heads Saturday, Cam Newton turned philosophical: “One thing that we preach is 'Have fun.' If you’re not having fun doing what you love to do there’s no use in doing it.” Panthers RapidReports

I'm curious how many people realize how this played out the last few weeks... Cam's interview did rub some of the team the wrong way, Gross and Kalil talked to Cam, Cam humbled himself and now everyone is making jokes...

tight locker room...

Cam talked about it in his press conference after the game..... said it was funny and that Gross and Kahlil are the biggest jokers on the team and are always doing stuff. He also mentioned there were some other guys who were the same.

I was sitting behind the bench and saw this happen. Jordan Gross, Jonathan Stewart, and Deangelo put the towels on their heads and shortly followed by a few more offensive lineman. Stewart kept walking around and pulling off the superman thing cam does, even doing it at the crowd a few times. Everyone looked like they were having a blast.

    • He makes a good point about Wallace.  In fairness to Wallace it is hard to play your position as freely as you need to when your defensive line is getting pushed around like ragdolls.  One of the greatest attributes a defensive line has is sucking up blocks, freeing up your linebackers.  Our defensive line couldn't suck up a lollipop more or less blocks.  I think Evans, Sanders and Tremble are going to be a really nice TE group.  I can see all three getting time on the field.  If Sanders can improve as a blocker teams won't be so inclined to believe it is a pass play whenever Sanders is on the field.  Ryan Fitzgerald, I think was an awesome pick-up. Hopefully he can fill our kicker void. Luke Kandra many turn out to be our next Norwell.  Everything I have heard about him says he's a beast.  He needs some refinement, but the good news is he's got Hunt and Lewis (arguably the best guard tandem in the league) to learn from.
    • Great teams build through the draft and have several young players that start that are on rookie contracts. It's important to hit on players in rounds 4 thru 7.  These should be future starters and solid depth.  When you hit on most of your picks you free up a lot of cap space for those one- or two-year players to fill spots you are thin at. No GM is going to perfect on all their picks.  You're going to whiff every once in a while.  That was Hurney problem.  He'd nail the first pick but after that it was reach after reach and we couldn't get any depth on this team. I'm excited about Morgan as our GM and hopefully he'll be around a long time.  It will be even better if Canales can continue to grow as a head coach, both in the development of young players and play calling. I remember last season after Young came back in the lineup and started to perform well.  We saw different plays I had only seen other teams use.   If Canales's play design and play calling continue to grow. Morgan and Canales will be linked together for a long time.  It would be nice to see a Coach and GM together for a decade or two. Go Panthers
