Devon Still 2011 Highlights

not at all sold regardless of how impressive his highlight reel is.

he just doesn't seem aggressive or dominant enough.

i don't like him as a top 10 candidate. i don't think he'll be an immediate impact kind of guy. he'd be as much a project as any DT coming out of college. it would take a couple years before we see what he can do and i just don't think it would be worth it.

people like him there because they want so much for there to be a DT that they are willing to sacrifice quality for filling a need.

he won't be the BPA there. not even close, imo.

i do like the potential he has a a run stuffer, but it's just not enough to warrant taking too early.

I've definitely grown into taking Dre as much as Still (most likely more now) and if he's there at our pick, he'll be ours for the taking and I will definitely be a happy camper.

The thing that has me so pro-Still are his combined abilities as a teammate, player, and leader. When that program suffered because of all the coaching bs he was apparently the glue that kept that team from falling apart. People called him a coach wearing a uniform up at Penn State. I'll try to find a few more good articles like one I'm about to post but this kid has the talent and mentality in my book.

I do get your opinion though that if we were maybe around the 14th or so pick he would be more appealing. If Kirkpatrick is there, it will be hard not to take the guy even over the WR talent potentially available.

Here's a fantastic (long) article about Still:

Rivera also said that he thinks we're fine at DT, that alone makes me seriously doubt we take one in the first.

Hmmm, didn't realize that.

You probably know me after last year's draft in that I'm trying to stay completely open to the 1st round possibilities. I never saw our Stewart or Beason picks coming back in the day but I was thrilled about them regardless.

I try not to put too many expectations on the guys but at the same time attempt to stay positive about all of them. This allows favorites to emerge without growing negative opinions on certain players. It made me neutral at first about the Cam pick and now I'm ecstatic about the Panthers direction.

Same thing could happen with a lot of guys this draft because of our pick position and the potential talent available. Its not necessarily an iffy situation but very hard to read imo

I know some will disagree, but I am anti 1st round DT's unless they are absolute top 3 type studs.... For some reason the bust rate on 1st round dt's have been extremely high in past years (Not bust as in straight garbage, but more like a huge underachiever for the expectations of the spot they were drafted in). If we pick up anther DT I'll rather take chances in rounds 2-4.

I interpreted his comments a bit differently. It sounded like he was saying that we were not zeroing in on DT's as some were suggesting, and that we may be okay with who we have.

Filtering out the coach speak, that said to me that we could go in any direction. Too much is being made of those comments.

i don't disagree with this at all.

stills is a stretch. nice guy, i'm sure, but the talent just isn't there, imo....esp. for immediate impact which is what we need.

Still looks really good in that highlight video and he might be a really good pick for us, but I dunno. I'm far from sold on him.

And there could be some solid DTs in the 2nd: Brandon Thompson, Josh Chapman and Jerel Worthy come to mind as high potential guys that are projected in the 2nd. If we don't take a CB in the 1st, I'd much rather spend our 2nd on a secondary guy though. Markelle Martin, Minnifield, someone like those guys.

Hell no to Ta'amu though, he gets pushed around worse than Fua and he's like 40 lbs heavier.

actually, if we found value at DT in the 2nd round (Ta'amu, Thompson) we should make the pick

I don't think that would be an updrade over the top pick of the 3rd round McClain with 1-yr of experience. A 3rd rounder with a year of exp = a 2nd round DT this year (to me) from a pure value stand point. From a talent stand point.. if a 1st round grade DT drops like Worthy or Cox, then I could get on board with that. Not sure about Thompson.. but I do like Chapman, he reminds me of Casey Hampton and Jurrell Casey from last year's draft.. he will be a 3rd round pick though.

    • Two things: 1. Dr. Eric Eager is central to the draft process 2. I know that it was edited, but we didn't hear "Thieneman" one time, not even before the Vikings pick.
    • Why would he sign here as a guard when surely someone would sign him as a tackle?  Assuming he is healthy
    • Went back to watching the highlights. With a sober mind haha. Here is what I saw.    freddie needs to make 1 of those but the rest aren’t on him.    Slavin was BBBBAAAD again last night. Not sure what is going on with these game one Slavin gafs.    miller was ok but had his worst game in the playoffs so far.    nikishin was no good. His his awful turnover led to the first goal at the end of the first period that just can’t happen. ghost was beat like a drum multiple times last night, including the go-ahead goal at the end jarivs wont shoot. He is either hurt or he is struggling mentally and I think it could be a combination of both. He passed up a wide open net on the power-play only to pass it to no one and cleared it himself.     Svech played well. He is getting zero help on that line.    aho. Worst game as a pro. I mean that. He won’t shoot it, passes go to no one and turns it over repeatedly.  He did exactly what they did against Montreal game one when Miller had a turnover. Aho left his man to go help and left the golden Knight player wide open in front of Freddie.  If I was Rod, you Tell Aho when that thing hits your stick you fire it  someone needs to sit him down just him in a room and ask what’s going on. He seems soft, timid and has zero fire.   canes could have won that game   There isn’t a gap between these two teams  they are dead even   Carter Hart’s gonna get lit up in this series. We can beat that guy. the consensus last night was our defense played horrible and our stars won’t score.  clean the defense up. Tell the top line to shoot it everything and we’ll win tomorrow night.   Possibly convincingly.
