Should we spend a high pick on a DT?

We need a DT capable of demanding double teams consistently and keeping guys off our Linebackers regardless of where he is picked. If that is in the first round, so be it.

I'll say this though, there's a LOT of talent in the second round for cb/safety/de and we don't have a third round pick. Gotta make the first two rounds count.

I don't think we should spend a 1st or 2nd on a DT just to be taking a DT. That's kinda what we did with McClain last year in the 3rd and DEFINITELY what we did with Fua, just took DTs because that's what we needed . But I do really like Brockers in the 1st, or Thompson or Poe in the 2nd.

Do I think we should? Yes.

Do I think we will? No.

Rivera's comments plus the fact we spent two third round picks on the position last April has me doubting we do much, if anything along the DL.

I think this situation is comparable to the Clausen and Newton situation. We spent a 2nd on Clausen in '10 and then he didn't show much his rookie year. When we had the opportunity to draft a potential playmaker at that position we didn't let the previous year's pick deter us. That's how I think we should look at DT this year. If Brockers continues to look like a playmaker and possibly the BPA at a position of need, we shouldn't let two 3rd round picks from last year's draft deter us from taking someone who could greatly improve an important position of need. And drafting him doesn't even completely invalidate the previous pick, like Newton did to Clausen. The two picks from last year can still be used in rotation, we can still get use out of them (unlike Clausen).
