Newton and Dalton greeted each other at the hotel before Wednesday's opening practice.

"We were able to come in and the teams trusted us to come in and lead the team," Dalton said. "So I think it's great. We just came out and did what we were able to do — just be ourselves and it worked out for both of us. We both came into great situations."

Great quotes from Cam:

Newton is backing up Brees and Rodgers, and doesn't mind starting on the bench.

"I idolized them throughout the year, watched so much film on them how they play the game from the check downs, to the way they throw, to everything," Newton said. "Lo and behold, we're on the same roster.

"So I'm watching and learning. What better way to learn than firsthand? I don't really don't mind, especially to these two MVP candidates. I'll be second string to that, man," he said.

The Panthers missed the playoffs after finishing 6-10, but Newton promises he has a lot more to offer as his game matures.

"I've had an unbelievable and blessed year, but at the same time, I feel the best is yet to come for Cam Newton," he said. "I'm going to continue to work hard and push myself."

Looking back at game film of himself, Newton said there were things he was happy with and some things that were "disgusting to look at."

"That's why you grow into the game and watch film on yourself to see yourself now and see yourself in the future," he said.

and on the Panthers future

And to Newton, the future is bright in Carolina, which is looking to become a playoff contender.

"The Carolina Panthers, coach (Ron) Rivera, (General Manager) Marty Hurney and (owner) Jerry Richardson, they have everybody's interest at heart and they're going to do what's the best for this team," Newton said. "That's something I do know and I can attest to. This team, this organization is going in the right direction to be an elite playoff team and contender year in and year out."

What do you me "we" kemosabe?

I know Dalton played very well, but the season he had doesn't come close to the season Cam had.

I consider dalton in the same league, they will forever be compared due to being drafted together. And what dalton said was true both teams drafted them with full intent to have as their starter and they both did very well.

Cam's in the conversation for greatest rookie season of all time, haven't heard Dalton mentioned in that conversation.

Dalton played very well, but the season he had is not in the same class as the season Cam had.

I don't think Dalton ever said anything like that. I think Dalton and Newton are definitely in the same league. It will take another season or two before Newton can really pull away.

    • D Carr must have really disliked the saints to wait and do this announcement after the draft has passed if he made this call a few weeks before the draft sure they would have approached it and the offseason differently.  oh well will be interesting to see how their qbs perform.  would love to see them roll with Thill and just make the whole offense towards his skillset.  Although sadly would be only playing in about half the games with how often he gets injured.
    • I have to say it's quite fascinating seeing you pivot from months and months of wailing and agonizing about threads derailing into Bryce Young slingfests only for you to turn around and do the same thing. And just for the record. Nobody in life ever attained wisdom and clarity from mistakes by having people blindly fawn over them and tell them they are above reproach and incapable of making mistakes. Our front office is just as human as we are. And based on the fact that front offices across the league outside of a handful of teams change on a fairly regular basis it's safe to say they are certainly no more infallible than the average Joe even though they possess significantly more knowledge usually. If you want a utopia where all you do is shine shoes for anyone associated with the Panthers you go right on ahead and create yourself a new community sir. More power to you.
    • I trust Morgan when it comes to LBs so I think Wallace will do well.
