Panthers A Sleeping Giant (Article)

i'll buy everyone of those bold statements.

i'm totally on board with that 3000 yard rushing. i've been saying that for a while. i thought we were capable of it before cam got here. now i see it as very likely.

i'm not quite so bullish on the defense being a top 5, but top 10? yeah, i can see it. at the very least a top 15.

if we continue to have that dominant run game and passing game as well as even just a mediocre defense, i can see us heading into the playoffs as a wildcard. if the saints struggle next year at all i can see us rising above them in the NFCS.

The Panthers are a sleeping giant and have been for a number of years. The Panthers have a lot of cornerstone players in comparison to the league. Smith, Beason, Kalil, Gross, Wharton, Gamble, Johnson, Anderson, TD(used to be), and how Cam Newton and Greg Olsen. We just gotta get some depth and build the defense.

Not sure if I want 3000 yds, that means Cam is running a lot. I'd rather him have 5,000 yds passing and get Smitty 2000 yds and his ticket to the HOF.

Actually it means we're running a lot, Cam's passing yards were much lower than the start of the season because our running game picked up. And a result of that he threw less interceptions.

3000 yards is crazy. Nobody has done it for at least 20 years (that was all I could be bothered to look up).

The Pats hold the record for yards in a season at 3,165 yards in 78.

EDIT: Looks like it's only been done twice since the merger, 78 Pats and 73 Bills

we have been pushing 2500 for several years. in '08 and '09 we were just under that. last year we were at 2400...and that was with the run game getting a really slow start.

i don't think we would have to have more carries per game because i can see it being more efficient than last year along with the whole offense.

while it's not likely, it's definitely doable.

Dont really get saying they will now have tape(game planning) on Cam. Thats what all the trolls said after his first couple of starts about the rest of the season. Fact is you cant stop greatness. There are years of tape on Peyton, Brady, Brees etc... and yet they continue to torch defenses. Best any team can do is hope to contain him, the DWill and JStew will burn them. Just sayin.....

this sounds a bit homerish, but considering what we saw last year from cam and the rest of the offense, i think there's a lot of truth to it. much more likely that this is the case than cam and the offense taking a significant step backward.

No, you can stop Brady, etc......it is just very difficult to do.

There will eventually be a Cam blueprint regardless of how he develops.......few teams probably will have the bodies to implement it though.

Top 5 ranked NFL defense in 2012? Isn't that what you usually need to guarantee that you make it to the playoffs? This article should have spent more time explaining how it's possible to go from #28 to #5 defense in one season rather than explaining how likely it is that we go to the NFC Championship game.

This article may be something I fap to on a rainy night, but if I wanna be a realist, this article is a mess.

It's like us turning TD into our Vick neutralizer. Watch NFC South teams start drafting linebackers whose sole job it is to spy Cam.

    • Yeah I find myself flipping between the worst case scenario of Bryce either playing just mediocre enough for our decision makers to justify giving him a contract extension in their eyes because they want to justify drafting him. Or Bryce going back to playing poorly and us having no one else to fall back on because Pickett might be decent for one or two games but there's no one else and our locker room starts to get ugly because we went all in with our salary cap and guys careers are on the line. This scenario which IMO is the higher probability given our schedule and the amount of tape out there on Bryce is why I say if we can trade down and acquire a few more mid or late round picks we should draft a developmental QB. Not looking for a guy to be the savior but someone with the necessary physical tools and who could actually run a QB sneak. But we'll just have to see how it shakes out. I just want a competitive team but the last thing I want is the season to fall apart because we once again threw our arms up in regards to the QB room.
    • ^This. Rico was dynamite when we needed it last season, but not enough to keep but it massively upped his earning potential. It was a win-win for both sides. And he was there to cover the hole left by the injury to another RB, and hopefully his release to free agency means there's good news for us on the way. These new ones give us the opportunity to do that again, on the offensive line and elsewhere. We've got some long term question marks here and there due to injuries and age, and these players have a chance to up their value on the open market or settle down with us if the opportunity arises. And none of it ties us down with dead money down the road if it doesn't work out. And we've been in dead money hell for a decade now. Lease the ones you like, buy if you fall in love.
    • Our red zone offense was excruciatingly painful to watch last season. A half decent TE would do a lot to change that.
