I really need to make an effort post about the bucs

Now that makes sense....a double edged sword. No way the Bucs could make a 2012 run with that money considering it would basically cripple them moving forward from 2012.

on one hand they're terribly run enough to try to pull that off.

On the other, spending money...

Tampa Bay has never been a big spender but may be forced to do so. They probably thought that they could get buy on the cheap especially after they had a 10-6 year in 2010. Then things blew up, they turned over the staff and lost the fanbase. Now they have to do what Richardson did last year which was spend a ton of money convincing fans they are serious about trying to contend and win the division. Otherwise they face continued blackouts. So they might be serious about spending big time, not because they want to but because they have no choice.

except the Panthers spent 90% of their money retaining their own players, the same ones that had been there for 2010.

The Bucs don't have to spend any money at all since the floor doesn't kick in until 2012.

they'll probably narrowly miss (read: not try to sign) all the big name free agents and end up overpaying for like Curtis Lofton.

Basically what I'm saying is no one came back to the Panthers last year because they resigned everyone, or they got Shockey in free agency.

They came back because of CAMMY CAM

It was really useful for Richardson that Cam blew up in week one.

Well, assembling all those high-priced FA's certainly worked out well for the Eagles...

I have a hard time believing the Bucs are actually going to spend any of that money, but I hope they do so it can turn into an even bigger dumpster fire down there then it already is.

I expect that we'll see the effects of that unforeseen development this off-season. Free agents that wouldn't ever consider the Panthers in the past might be drawn into the Cam Vortex, and re-structuring some deals might come a little easier...its a new wrinkle...

Whether you spend your money retaining your own guys who are coming up for free agency or buying someone else's players the net effect is the same. Guys like Charles Johnson were considered one of the best free agents out there much like Mario Wlliams is this year.

Tampa doesn't have to spend any money but they are likely to do so anyway because they need to re-energize the fanbase and show the new coaching staff that they are willing to give them the ammunition they need to contend.

Could they go on the cheap again? Absolutely their history says they will. But if they want to fill the seats, they are going to have to loosen the pursestrings plain and simple. Will they get what they paid for? Most teams rarely do.
