Potential Draft Day Trade?

Ruff

Recommended Posts

There's a headline on NFL.com that's really interesting right now.

The Washington Post reported Tuesday, citing multiple sources with knowledge of the situation, the Redskins are willing to trade two first-round picks (this year's No. 6 selection and next year's No. 1) in addition to a number of mid- to late-round picks to move up to select Griffin.

...

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch also reported Tuesday the Rams have had very preliminary discussions with the Cleveland Browns (pick No. 4 overall), the Miami Dolphins (No. 8) and the Redskins, in addition to a couple of other teams outside of the top 10.

It seems that the Redskins have laid out that they're definitely willing to move up and grab RGIII. Well, we already knew that, didn't we? But, notice that it's St. Louis saying that Cleveland is also involved in the trade, now the Cleveland beat writers, while the Washington Post is saying that Washington is very interested.

This leads me to believe, along with some of the comments that RGIII doesn't really fit Pat Shurmur's West Coast offense as much as he does Shanahan's mobile-QB/Stretch offense, that the Browns may not be willing to deal that much for RGIII, instead, letting Washington take him.

Now, there have been reports that Miami is very interested in Matt Flynn, which leaves Cleveland still needing a QB. We all know that Cleveland wants a quality RB, and Trent Richardson is a guy that they could definitely take at 4. But, how will they get a QB? I think it's very possible that Cleveland could trade their 22nd pick and a 2nd or 3rd rounder to move up to the 9th spot, and take Ryan Tannehill. Reports are that Tannehill could amaze people at his Pro Day, and if he does, then I think this becomes more and more likely.

If we're moving back 13 spots we better be getting a hell of a lot more then a second or third rounder....

There would be more, but I'm not sure what it would be. If we use Cleveland and Atlanta's trade from last year as a reference, Atlanta traded 2011's 1st, 2nd, and 4th and 2012's 1st and 4th, but that was going from 27 to 6.

I don't have the Draft Pick Trade Chart, but I think it would be something similar to that, because moving up to get a QB is always at a premium, and Cleveland would want to do it to make sure that Seattle doesn't nab him at 12.

If you go by the value chart they would have to give up a second next year. However, if the Panthers were approached about doing that trade I would only be moving down that many spots if another first is included....

so we trade down 13 spots, pick up alot more picks that we cant pay because we are only $2.8 million under the cap. gotcha.

Reports are that the cap number will be similar to what it is now when the new league year starts.

We can move the 2.8m we're under now to next year's cap, to increase it by that much, which would make us 5.6m under the cap. (2.8m under now, move it to the new league year where we will be another 2.8m under, which makes us 5.6m under.)

A couple of restructures/extending contracts, and we would easily be 12-14m under the cap by the time Free Agency starts.

I know people throw out that smokescreen joke a lot around here, but putting out what you are willing to give up to move to a very desirable draft position 2 months ahead of time isn't normal. The ol' Shanahan smokescreen I say. I think they either sign Peyton or just take Tannehill at the 6. The Browns are in a much better position to get that pick if they want it.

This team needs some elite talent, im not for moving WAY down the first round. We might not be picking this high again for a while, im hoping we get somebody that can make the kinda impact Cam did on the defensive side of the ball this year. Dont really see anybody like that at the bottom of the first round. I would only listen if a team throws in some first rounders to move.

Fletcher Cox, Jerel Worthy, Janoris Jenkins, Chandler Jones, and Zach Brown could all potentially be there.

That's the problem with this years draft, there's not elite talent at #9. It's just a bunch of guys that are really close together. This is an extremely deep draft because a lot of underclassman stayed out due to the potential Lockout. It's also much like the NBA draft where it's EXTREMELY top heavy talent wise, then after the first five or so guys there's a bunch of similar guys. The drop off from #9-#25 talent wise is pretty marginal. We would be idiots not to move down if it could net us an extra #1 in a draft that could include guys like Robert Woods, Nickell Robey, Desmond Trufant, T.J. McDonald, Barrett Jones, Nico Johnson, Alex Hurst, Cobi Hamilton, Taverras King, D.J. Fluker, Keenan Allen etc....next years draft is LOADED with talent, it would be foolish to not take the opportunity to pick up an extra big pick....

I've been thinking lately Tannehill could really be the widcard for us that could significantly sweeten our Day 1 draft.

It could be someone jumping up before 9 to grab him and having quality draft picks all fall down one slot because let's face it: Other than QB and RB we need help almost everywhere. If 3 QBs get picked before we're at the podium it's good for us because that is a position we are set at.

Oooooooorrrrrrr as you suggest, Tannehill fitting in in a trade down scenario.

Hopefully one way or another things work to our advantage. :cam:

So what's the consensus on the "locks" to fall before the 9th pick?

I'm seeing Luck, RGIII, Kalil, and Blackmon, but that's just my opinion.

These trade scenarios could throw all sorts of curve-balls into the draft order and BPA's. It's going to be interesting for sure.

The locks? Hm.

1. Andrew Luck

2. RGIII

3. Matt Kalil

After that, there's really no telling. Who trades up to get RGIII? Does Miami have a QB and do they need a receiver to go with them? Does Tampa want offense or defense?

    • So dumb I get it, they want to expand the reach of the NFL, but it's not the right sport to be playing games halfway around the world for a variety of reasons.   But one of the main ones is what happens if a player has an injury in that game? A lot of times, you're not supposed to fly right after some injuries, so when they happen here it's not a big deal, the player stays in that town for a few days and then flys home separately.  But that opens a whole bag of worms if the game is played all the way out in Australia. Plus just needing that long of a flight to get out there and back, even if they get a bye week after, it means a ton of travel and needing to adjust to a new time zone directly after another game.
    • I don't think it was fear of the unknown because he tried to hide the extent of the injuries that made him drop. After the drop, the reports I heard were that teams knew what was wrong with his knee and it was something similar to another athlete from a few years ago (honestly don't remember if it was even a football player).  That it was basically one of those things where he should be fine for a while, there isn't a huge concern of immediate injury risk.   But what he has going on with his knee is something that is degenerative and there's little chance he'll be able to play more than 5 or so years on it before he won't be able to play anymore. So basically it was teams knowing if they draft him, he's probably going to be only a rookie contract player and even if he's great, you might not be able to get use out of him on a second contract.  Which in turn makes the drop make sense, but I'm kinda surprised some contending team didn't take him late in the 1st, hoping he'd put them over the top on a SB run but then not even have to worry about giving him a big contract in 4 years too.
