D-Will or Stewart trade?

Stewart can't leave unless we allow him to do it. We can franchise tag him next year, which this year costs 7.7 million for a running back. If we can't get a first for him we keep him and tag him next year and try and trade him again. Bottom line if he wants to go elsewhere I am fine with trading him if we get our first back. But less than that and we can tag him with no problem. After all we didn't even use the tag this year. Why would you draft a guy in the 2nd or third and hope he is great when you can use your first and get what many folks believe may be the best back in the NFL.

I wish we could find a way to keep both, but I'm mostly concerned about the future of this team and holding onto my favorite player (Stewart).

If Deangelo can get 1000 yards next season, then he's cool. If he under-performs and then restructures his contract to reflect his status on the team, then he's cool. If we hold onto him and get rid of the younger, stronger, more versatile running back simply because of the former's contract, then he's not cool with me. I hope that makes sense. I'm a fanboy, I'll admit it.

I don't think money is the issue and I don't think William's contract will prevent us from keeping Stewart. If he doesn't want to share carries or work in our system then he needs to go elsewhere. We are going to use a multi-back system whether he is here or not. I figure Hurney signing Williams long term might be because he knows Stewart doesn't want to be here long term. It is not the first time I have heard rumbling.

I also think we should keep D-Will and Stewart even if we sign Tolbert, a team can play with 3 backs, just look at the Saints or the Pats their running games are working well whth 3 backs. Tolbert can also play Fullback so ..

Neither of those teams have a running back with a contract like Deangelo's. That's the difference. I thought before that maybe Tolbert didn't want 3rd string money after turning down SD, but now I'm starting to think that they just lowballed him too hard.

I find it hard to believe that there is a GM that is cheaper than Hurney, but we'll just have to wait and see.

    • I watch a ton of NFL because the product on the field is still the best on the planet. But, that will only get you so far. US sports fans are an aging crowd so there will be a dramatic drop when the Boomers die off and the GenXers do, as well.  The Millennials will probably be the last major generation that watches sports in high numbers.
    • The Bryce stanning is relentless.    Cam’s team won two games the previous season and legit was picking 1st. Bryce’s team won 7 games the previous season and was actually in playoff contention. And legit earned the 9th overall pick.  If anything made that team worse in 2023 than in 2022 it was Bryce. Come on. And missing DJ, I’ll concede that.
    • I see the logic in what you're saying, but I'd also say there were games with a bit more talent on the roster that some of the L's are actually W's.  AZ - We don't get off to a crappy start and if this game is later in the season when Bryce is a bit more comfortable, I think we beat the Cards NO - At least one of, if not both of these games would've gone our way SF - Perfect opportunity to snag a win on the road that Purdy handed to us, but we couldn't do anything offensively TB - Final game was winnable in Tampa  All this to say, I think 8 wins is about where we were at in 2025 if you take the games we barely won and combined them against the games that we barely lost.  Add 5-6 new pieces in FA and the draft. We went head to head and almost beat the Rams in a meaningful playoff game that gave a lot of the youth that experience to take into 2026 and beyond, and I do think 10-11 wins is achievable next year.  Not guaranteed, but much the way folks thought we could get to 8 or 9 wins this year as the ceiling, I think 10-11 is the new ceiling for next year.
