Everette Brown DE FSU

We gave up a first to pay someone second round money.. and with no cap next year.. and rookie salary cap still in form of speculation.. this is a pretty smart move. Especially if we deal Julius for a Single First, which some teams may decide to do once they realize they have glaring holes after the draft that can't be filled in by cheap FAs.

SI.com had his rated as going in the top half of the 1st round. He had a rating of 4.25, which is like the 4th or 5th highest out of any player available this year......I would say that is it one hell of a pick in the middle of the second. This guy could be an absolute BEAST for us!

Was the best avaliable player on the board, atleast you guys attempted to sink or swim with your 1st rounder again. Not too sure on how well he'll translate but there was someting about him that made other teams not feel overly impressed.

This guy have a history of legal problems?

You're the big FSU fan, what do you think of his play/ability.

Quick with a deadly spin move, he's better than you'd think against the run but obviously could use some work. He can be telepathic on the snap count. It's no secret Nole DE's haven't had a lot of success in the NFL (one problem is FSU lines them out wide and puts a high priority on speed) and I would be worried if we had a gapping hole at DE or weren't going to be running a Meeks Tampa 2.

As with any DE, there is bust potential, but I am very happy about this pick.

Funny you say that.

1) When will you start working as a scout?

and

2) Did you notice most every draft group compares him to freeny?

Shut up! I didn't see you asking that of anyone who gave the opinion that he is so awesome, this is such a wonderful pick, etc...

JP $crewed Carolina by not signing his Franchise paperwork after demanding to be traded - in essence $crewing us out of a 2009 1st round draft pick (which no one thought he was worth), and we just spent ANOTHER 1st round pick - next year's - to get his replacement. One way to look at it is if we don't get a 1st round pick for him next year he will have cost us TWO 1st round picks, not to mention the one we used to draft him ourselves!

Personally I would rather have waited - there would have been a talented DE at #59, like Krueger. Krueger went soon after because we picked Brown. Krueger would have been a good pick, and we would still have had next year's 1st round draft pick and JP playing this season.

The truth is Hurney and Fox mortgaged this year's 1st round pick for Otah last year because they were afraid of losing their jobs and needed to make it into the playoffs. After bombing that one with that embarrassing loss at home to the Cards, the JP fiasco telling the world he doesn't want to play for this team and a lot of Fox's D-Coaches walking out on him and a 12-4 team, Hurney and Fox know they need to not only make it into the playoffs but actually have to win one this year or theyir jobs are in jeopardy again...so once again they have mortgaged the team's future to save their jobs!

This kid may prove to be a good pick-up, but is this turns out to be a bad move, it is going to turn into a REALLY UGLY move!

This was posted at panthers.com. Highlights of an interview with Brown (I hope they have the full audio up later like they usually do):

9:06 P.M. EDT: Notes from Everette Brown's teleconference with Charlotte-area media:

• "If I had one team I wanted to come to, it would have been the Carolina Panthers." Talked about going to a Panthers game against the Saints when he was 14 years old. "All I remember is the excitement I had going to an NFL game, getting there early and coming up to the edge of the stands, watching the players warm up."

• Went to high school in Wilson, N.C., but says that Stantonsburg is his hometown. &$149; His wait was spotlighted on ESPN, which had a camera on hand. Brown described the process as "stressful" but said he was "very calm." "I just wanted to play football again," he said.

• He says he feels comfortable playing either side of the line.

• He watched Julius Peppers play basketball and run track when he was younger. Peppers and Brown are from nearby towns down east.

• Said he did not talk to the Panthers between the Combine and last Sunday, when Panthers scout Mike Szabo got in touch with him.

Very cool that he went to a Panthers game before. Probably our only draftee ever that can say that. Looks like he grew up a Panthers fan.

Man I don't know what the hell to think about Everrete Brown and this deal.

Brown is definitely a top notch player, and honestly in not thinking about what we gave up, he is definitely a good pick up.

The only thing about him is:

He's small

FSU DEs have a bad track record

He's a jr.

I hope this kid turns out to be a beast, but was he really worth all we lost when we have Charles Johnson and decent depth at DE? Cause you don't trade all we did for just a rotational project DE!?

*sigh*

Horrible move by the Panthers front office. This guy is undersized and and he is not Dwight Freeney so everyone just shut their mouths. Unless he starts next season, he is not worth a first round pick.

The fact of the matter is nobody knows how Brown will play in the NFL.

But our front office seems to be able to pick defensive talent, especially in the first rounds. And given that this guy was also considered by many to be the second best at his position, than I'm going to consider it a decent move until proven otherwise.

As has been pointed out, he's a high character guy. One would think Panthers fans would be grateful for that alone, after dealing with the Peppers fiasco. Look at the difference players like Beason and Harris have made just by being leaders on the field.

    • With Freddie Slavin and Svech both playing at MVP levels, no one can touch us. Burns playing well.  Imagine if Jarvy and Aho get going…
    • Just because all draft picks are a gamble doesn't mean you don't have a better chance at hitting on a better player the higher you're drafting. It would literally be like someone saying, I'll give you 1 or 2 free spins on a slot machine, and you say you'll take the 1 because you're not likely to win anything anyways with 1 or 2, so why bother? The Cowboys desperately wanted T-Mac, but because they were 4 picks behind us, they weren't able to get him.  If you told Cowboys fans that had they lost 2 more games last year in a lost season, that it would get them the player they wanted so badly, would they in retrospect go back and lose those games to get their guy? 95% of them would take that trade off in a heartbeat, and the others who wouldn't are the fans who would rather enjoy an extra win or two in a poo season to then set themselves up to be better for the next decade. I also think the fans who argue against this thinking, get too caught up in the "well that means you're going to be rooting against us late in the season even if we still have a shot at the playoffs." Which isn't true, it's saying if you're telling me right now we'd make the playoffs but lose in the first round, that I'd rather end up 8-9 or 9-8 and just miss the playoffs because in our opinion, the benefits that come along with that outweigh the benefit of the players getting 1 game of playoff experience.
    • In relation to tanking. I think you can count on one hand the number of people here who actually want us to lose football games. When accounting for it across the fanbase it amounts to maybe 2% of the entire Panthers fanbase. But you engage with some internet trolls and think haters are coming out of the woodwork and hey look at that it's all a conspiracy that leads to Bryce Young haters. Do you hear yourself sir? If it sounds ridiculous that's because it is. I mean at this point do you see Bryce haters in your dreams? As far as the culture of this franchise goes we seem to be doing better in that department via what we are building right now and with the people we have in place. But we also shouldn't just make assumptions just yet either. The rubber still needs to meet the road. And going back to previous seasons I think we can acknowledge although tanking obviously isn't a thing there were some times where we thought our culture was improving but really it wasn't. Yes I'm looking directly at some of those wins under Wilks. If the culture had truly changed we would not have lost to the Steelers who have been mediocre for years at home the way we did and they were starting Mitch Trubisky ffs. We did not change our culture for the better and we won games that ultimately meant nothing. It was just a brief mirage. We've done this for years now. The harsh truth of the matter is the Panthers have not had a winning season or been to the playoffs in going on 8 years but in those years they've been trying to convince themselves they aren't poo but in the process all they've done throughout most of that time period is squander better draft position and we were still the worst team in the league for our troubles. At the end of the day we should be able to just be adults and reconcile with that. And no that isn't being "pro tank" or any other boogeyman term it's simply recognizing reality.
