Michael Lombardi On Frank Alexander

Ruff

Recommended Posts

Michael Lombardi did his Top 12 value picks, and Frank Alexander was listed at #6. Here's what he said about him:

6. Frank Alexander, DE, Carolina (103rd). Alexander has great arm length and inside quickness, and he seems to have a knack for making plays. The ex-Sooner should be able to contribute to the Panthers defense right away.

just to play devils advocate:

30. Carolina Panthers

9. Luke Kuechly, OLB, Boston College

40. Amini Silatolu, G/OT, Midwestern State

103. Frank Alexander, DE, Oklahoma

104. Joe Adams, WR, Arkansas

143. Josh Norman, CB, Coastal Carolina

207. Brad Nortman, P, Wisconsin

216. D.J. Campbell, S, California

Ranked UDFA: Matt Reynolds (187)

Total Score: -98

Frank Alexander was the biggest reason this happened. He wasn’t ranked in my top 250 and I had watched enough tape on him to rank him. Joe Adams was a major steal.

Who is that from? Everything I've seen have said we've had one of the best drafts in football. Walterfootball, etc all said it.

It's a numerical evaluation of player value. It's implied that Alexander alone adversely affected overall value of our draft. Not a big deal, or a comment on our draft as a whole.

like I have said, I think we may have gotten 5-6 starters out of this draft including the punter. That's amazing.

I agree, 100%.

Luke Kuechly is going to be expected to start day one.

Amini will take Wharton's old job immediately.

Frank Alexander will be rotational at first, but I could definitely see him taking Hardy's job eventually.

Joe Adams will contribute as a PR right away, and will also get some awesome looks in Chud's offense, and if he sticks to Smitty, he could be Smitty v2.0.

Josh Norman could eventually be our #2 corner. He's physical, strong, and plays up against the line.

Brad Nortman is obviously starting.

Any idea why he wasn't more 'well-known' going into the draft?

I've seen he was a top sleeper pick by a couple of well-respected analysts, but why wasn't he a lock for early rounds and considered a sleeper?

I read/heard about the heart issue, but being that it wasn't legit, I don't see what would've hurt him.

If you watch the press conference with MH and RR carefully, you will hear Marty express his frustration about not being able to trade for a third rounder. Later he said that Alexander had a "first day grade" and then mumbled something about the old way the draft was done (Which meant that he had a second-round grade). When he fell to the fourth, Marty felt justified in surrendering a 2013 third rounder for what he was going to use a 2012 3rd rounder for.

Here is why the deal is smart:

1. A high fourth rounder in 2012 for (what we hope is a) low third rounder in 2013 + a 6th rounder. We get good value if we have a winning team in 2012.

2. We pay Alexander for 5 years on a 4th round rookie contract, opposed to a third round rookie contract.

At first, I was pissed. But as I researched Alexander and thought it through, I liked it.

    • 100%. And these same people will claim you have an agenda. You can't have it every way. We had the lowest rated defense in the league last year. Statistically the worst ever. By PFF grades (for whatever that's worth- but they are readily accepted, used, and conveyed by most "reputable" sources), the defense was the worst ever. Not only that, PFF rated our receiving corp the worst in football last season. The absolute worst... out of 32 teams. Which is why regardless of the lip service Canales and Morgan paid to the current guys, they knew it would be criminal not to give Bryce more help. People fixating on team stats and not taking these things into context are stupid, plain and simple, and I'm for one thankful they're not running this team (or probably anything for that matter bc they obviously can't discern reality. Again, going back to the eyeball test these Narrative Nancies seem to hate so much, did they not see the windows Bryce was putting balls into? Have the generally not watched much NFL? Please, please show me the film where all these NFL QBs are making throws like this to this point Bryce was "below average" down the stretch compared to them. Bryce made more wow throws in that 3 game stretch of the Bucs, Chiefs, and Eagles than every other QB combined in all the years since since Cam got hurt I genuinely am baffled by people that can watch throws like that and act like it's nothing. I guarantee you Steve Spagnola, Todd Bowles, and and Vic Fangio didn't think it was nothing after watching the little guy torch them with players those teams would be embarrassed to trot out at the skill position players. The national media spent all year making excuses for Mahomes not having elite weapons when he had multiple 1st & 2nd round talents at the skill positions along with future HoFers in Kelce and Hopkins. Bryce wasn't throwing for 300 yards every week with David Moore and Adam Theilen in spite of jaw dropping throws and you want to say the guy played below average. For those people, again, we ain't watching the same sport. And the name calling doesn't change that... The vitriol and projection... it's off the effing charts with these people.
    • "Well you see if you remove this terrible game that terrible game this other terrible game and then focus on these games you'll see he's actually one of the better QB's in the league and he's actually as good as Jayden Daniels". My god this place is delusional. I love it.
