Why Our Defensive Tackles Are Not As Bad As Portrayed

Recommended Posts

What? You'd rather believe your front office is lying for no apparent reason about the talent level at only one particular position or that certain defensive schemes require certain defensive traits that we lacked in order to be effective?

No I was agreeing with you - I just didnt say it very well -

Funny how EVERYBODY thought DT was our biggest need, then we don't draft one, and now it's nope it was the linebackers.

Many people thought LB play was the worst aspect of our D last year when all was said and done....

But we sucked on all levels.

I have been saying that the DT's wil be OK and that our LB play was atrocious last season for months. It was to be expected. With injuries, we had 3rd string LB's starting.

Most of the people who still believe our DT'S suck and will ruin our upcoming season are nuts and will not be convinced otherwise no matter what. Hell even Greg Cossell of NFL films who does more film study than anyone(at least in the media) and understands what he sees complented our rookie DT'S. And for the 17,000000th time Edwards will be back and likely surpise many on here. Rivera played against the guy twice a year while in San Diego so I am sure he knows more than anyone on here. Most DT'S take 3-4 years to truly become fulltime starters in the leauge. http://draftmetrics.com/files/When%20Can%20You%20Start.pdf

Last year we had 3 rookies, and 2 2nd year players at DT.

Piss-poor tackling made our defense look worse. Notice the guys we drafted, all of them are known to be secure tacklers. That alone will win us some games in comparison to last season.

I agree. That was the one thing that leapt out to me last year, was the buffoonery that was our tackling fundamentals. So many plays would have been stopped much sooner if our guys just remembered how to wrap up and make a tackle. That, to me, seemed evident. Basic Football 101, but something terrible to see last year.

LB and S play were both worse than DT play last year.

Overall LB + S play was a bigger problem than CB and DT play.

Most are in board with Martin needed competition but how this board is content with Chalres Godfrey continues to blow my mind. Worst tackling S in the NFL since he became a starter....it is a problem. And tackling comically enough is viewed as his strength

I want a stud S, DE, and CB next year. Thats all.

Nice work, OP. It's not surprising that our linebackers were a big weak spot in run defense last year but I don't think the people that were clamoring for a DT early in the draft were crazy either. They may not have been THE problem last year but they definitely weren't helping matters.

That said I'm glad they'll get another year to develop and hopefully the FO comes out looking like geniuses.

Giving you pie for the analysis. But again. This is only one play.

We were beat off tackle constantly all season, not more than in the Chicago game though. The line did a decent job eating up the blockers but our depleted lbing core couldnt clean it up. Yea, we could be better at dt, we don't have a big name that people want to hear, but overall, I don't think DT was our BIGGEST need.
