Some Don't Want Cam Scoring On The Ground ?

CRA

We drafted arguably one of the most dangerous and biggest matchup problems this league has ever seen....and people don't want Cam running?

Cam was one is the most efficient runners in the NFL last year.

Cam's running ability/threat was a HUGE part of the offense working.

Yes, we have talented RBs. However, it is easier to get Cam into the endzone than them. He is the best overall runner on this team....it is just a non-traditional method of doing it. He is the best runner bc people have to play so many other things prior to him taking off.

Cam Newton should score about 10 TDs on the ground with ease while young. Easy points. Much easier to stop a RB.

Doesn't mean our RBs shouldn't get there work (and that includes goal line)...but if we are going to be a high scoring team then Cam's arm legs are going to be the ticket.

Cam Newton is unstoppable to a large degree. To not play to that is silly.

tell us more mr. science

I just find it funny. Newton has potential to literally take the league over....and people are worried about him getting hurt and therefore want to pull the reigns back after one season? Cam hasn't even gotten comfortable yet...he is going to be a video game in the air and ground.

I love watching Cam run & he is truely a matchup nightmare for DCs, BUT...what is everyone going to say when Cam can't play QB b/c he took a huge hit on his right shoulder? Will you be the first 1 to stick up for the coaching staff to say it was a good decision?

We have so many weapons that it does not make sense for him to have to run, except when a play breaks down. Even tho exciting, I don't want him jumpng over a pile if Stewart, Williams or Tolbert can get it done.

Do you really want our team in the hands of Anderson or Clausen? Cam is big & strong, but no one is indestructable...don't test fate.

Can ask the same question from the opposite angle...

What is everyone going to say when he hangs in the pocket a little longer despite a clear running lane....takes a blindside hit and gets hurt.

Cam knows where hits are coming from as a runner much more so than as a passer. Also, is more likely to take a nasty hit while not prepared to take it as a passer.

Cam works great out of the spread option. If he isn't running then that formation doesn't work...RBs can run as well out of it and teams bring more heat on him.

Ignoring the odd comparision of the risk in the pocket vs. out of the pocket...I will just offer the development of Mike Vick. Everyone loved his multi-dimensional threats, but even tho Vick is & was never the QB Cam is, it can stunt the development of a QB. If you are asked to run, then you will be more inclined to pull it down too quick.

Cam did a good job of staying in the pocket when the presure was on & it led to huge plays. He ran when he needed to & he will always do that. Him running can lead to big plays, but the risks don't merit using him 'a lot' in that role. I think it was stupid to have him jumping over the goal line to the degree they did (I know it led to other opportunites, but it's not smart long term...I want Cam here for 10+ years, not 5years b/c of injuries).

probably get dissed for this but im gonna say it anyway...

Cam's run threat is awesome...love it...etc

But even though I love the fact that he can run and make plays... I would much rather see him passing/handing off rather than running himself.

DWill himself said in one of his broadcast (jokingly) that Cam was taking scores away from the other players (or something to that affect) The fact that he said it even jokingly shows at least an unspoken sentiment among some players last season that Cam was taking his role a bit too far.

Again I will say, I love that Cam can run, can score...etc. But in the long-term..i would rather see him develop into a traditional passing QB now, who can run when absolutely necessary rather than a season or two later when he has had a few too many hits/bangs and is forced to make that decision. Better to accept the role now, and adjust to it rather than wait until he HAS TO accept that fate and then adjust.

I will fully hope this season there will be less designed plays where Cam runs...and more of that he will pass, or otherwise run on the fly when his instincts tell him to run.

Cam is a world class QB. It is stupid to risk a world class QB for an unnessessary run play. We have RBs for that. My opinion. What makes a good running QB is the surprize when he spots all the guys that want to tackle him are out in coverage. Teams will learn to sucker him with this look too. Cam will develope an appreciation of the slide as well.

One of the stats that doesn't get as much play as all of the rookie records, is that Cam led the league in rushing 1st downs. Many of these came on 3rd or 4th and 1. This is in sharp contrast to Atlanta, who had a huge problem in this area. Cam's size and his ability to either find a crease or go over the top gives us a big advantage to keep drives alive. This should always be part of his game.

I don't have a problem with Cam running and or scoring TD's on the ground, but I am concerned with Cam getting hurt. I don't want him diving over the O-line and through the D-line to get into the endzone. I don't want him taking a hit in mid air as he dives toward the endzone, thats what our RB, WR and TE are for, not our Franchise QB. However I think that Cam is just as comfortable running the ball, so I would trust him with the ball to make safe decisions enough to avoid big hits. Like speed, that part of his game can't be coached. Draw up the o-plays and let him do his thing, but let him know what we want that thing to be.

I remember McNabb running around like crazy and breaking down defenses in his 1st couple of seasons. But when injuries started to pile on he wasn't nearly as effective and was forced to be more of a pocket passer. McNabb was a big man and still couldn't handle the pounding of a dual threat quarterback in the NFL.

I don't think anyone is saying to put an anchor on Cam's leg, just not call designed run plays a lot for him. Those plays that you referenced were ad libs, not designed runs most of the time.

As long as you are on the football field, you are liable to get injured.

To me Cam is >>>> Vick as a runner, not in terms of play but because of smarts. Cam gets down before he gets hit 95% of the time. Cam gets as much as he can then goes down unless he's close to a touchdown.

Him leaping over the "scrum" does get me worried though as he is opening himself up to hits he can't brace himself against. Other than that I am fine with him running because he has a great running style that will reduce the likelihood of him taking "big hits"

    • So the last guy who had the job got hired by his former team directly into a role he has no direct experience in?
    • Hard to pass up millions for a couple of days work per week for a coaching gig in the NFL that is 60-80 hours each week during the season and a more relaxed 50 hours a week during the off season. Yeah, I'd love to see him as our DC but hard to see him giving up the cushy job there if he gets it. And he's going to be a great commentator for the network.
    • Really, I think that is where negotiations come in. If you've got a QB getting you to 10 wins but statistically he's not a great performer, then you say look you can take $22 million or you can try it on the market. Because let's face it, out there, any leadership skills that we're seeing aren't going to be on the table, it's just going to be performance and that lands him in the QB2 market, which is much, much less lucrative (although any of us would love that money).  No one is saying that Bryce will be a $50 million QB, barring something short of a miraculous jump. I'm just saying that if we are winning somehow with him at the helm, then it would be fuging stupid to dive back into the rookie pool all over again. Let's say we do hit the 10 win mark, heck, let's call it 11 and a second round in the playoffs. I think we can all say that would be a really uplifting result and one that should be doable if we have good play. What do we do then? Here's what I would offer if I were Morgan and Tepper. $25 million a year for 3 years, each year with up to $10 million in incentives for touchdowns, wins, playoff depth, being under 10 interceptions, completing a full season, passing yardage milestones, taking less than 15 sacks. Look, Bryce isn't a Ferrari, he isn't a Corvette, or a mid-level BMW. He's probably a new Toyota Sienna that will definitely get you somewhere and bring the whole team along with it, no fuss but not a lot of pizazz.  And really, it's about the destination, not about what drove you there.
